I have noticed this on my new Pioneer VSX-1014TX and with my old Kenwood VR-309. At times, the receiver does not automatically "lock on" to the audio when first powering it on. For example, if I turn on my cable box after turning on my receiver, at times no audio will be heard. In other words, I do not hear the receiver "click" and lock on to the audio. In order to clear it up, if I just change inputs on the receiver and go back to the cable input or turn the A/V off and on again, it will then lock (click) on to the audio. This happens only on occasion with my Pioneer, but happened quite a bit with my old Kenwood. Whats going on here?

I think I may have figured out when the receiver behaves this way. If it detects a "muted" component (that was already turned on) when the receiver is turned on (i.e. a STB that is already on in "mute") it (A/V) will not engage. So even if you "un-mute" the STB, the receiver will still not output the audio until you either change the receivers input to another source then back to the original source, or turn the receiver off and on again, after the source is "un-muted".

I hope that made sense?
