What information do people have about the Sony VPL HS-1 front projector?

Resolution seems a little low and I am not sure how the 16x9 mode works.

I am in the process of looking for a replacement for my dead Sony VPL 400Q and this looks like it might be an alternative.

Of course for $1000 more I could get a much higher resolution 10ht.

Any thoughts?

The best thing for you to do may be to decide on a budget first.

Then, figure out if the room will have total light control.

Then, figure out if the rainbows from DLP's bother you at all or give you a headache.

For me, I had a budget of about $3-4k or so. I had reasonably poor light control (though that is going to change some), but regardless, I didn't want to have to watch in a completely dark room. DLP's don't bother me too much, but I'd like to have guests over. If the rainbows give any of them a headache, it's not worth it for me.

In the end, I got a Proxima DP8000 on an auction for $2940 shipped. These are the specs:

3000 ANSI Lumens

800:1 contrast

XGA native LCD with MLA panels

It was new. :) I just happen to get very lucky.
From a store, they're just over $5k. At that price range, you might as well get a hitachi 5500. LCOS, baby!
