I did a search on this forum, but found no info on this DVD.

There were apparently two (2) DVD releases. The first one in 2000 by Hens Tooth Video. The second release was in 2003 by Pacific Family Entertainment.

Both aren't cheap to buy because they're out of print. However, I'm nervous that both might suck visually. We all remember the debacle with "The Final Countdown" and Pacific Family Entertainment, so I'm hesitant to buy that version.

And I don't know much about Hens Tooth Video.

I'd hate to find these were VHS dubbed to DVD.

Anyone have any of these and any comments on quality? I made my own DVD from the laserdisc (which was pretty shoddy quality also), but I'm looking for a better version.

Hens Tooth's CROSS IF IRON looked to be taken from a old PAL source, so I cant imagine SAVANNAH SMILE looking good.

Same thing was said about Final Countdown (looked like PAL convert) for the PFE version.

O'well, guess I'll stick with my home made copy

Hen's Tooth DVDs are often very disappointing, but to their honor and credit they are legit; all their stuff is properly licensed from the current copyright holders. Urban legend is that it's practically a one-man outfit.

SAVANNAH SMILES was an indie that got picked up by Embassy for theatrical release, but if Hen's Tooth had it, apparently successor StudioCanal's claim has expired.

By now, we should all surmise that if PFE tells us the sun is shining, go grab a flashlight. Use that advice accordingly with any DVD they're associated with.

FYI - I finally got this via Netflix, Studio Canal release, and it looked really good. It didn't look like the poor PFE crap we've had to watch in the past.

You can see it's a low budget film, there's quite a bit of film grain, but many of the outdoor shots look spectacular for such an old film. Sound was a bit flat, I almost prefer the laserdisc PCM track, but the picture more than made up for it.
