is there a way to take xbox games that are presented in 720p and convert it to 1080i? My tv does not support 720p but I notice that there are several games for xbox in this format and only maybe 1 or 2 in 1080i.

No, I haven't seen any device that converts a 720p component input to a 1080i component output. Your TV needs to support 720p and convert it to 1080i internally, many models from Sony and Toshiba do that. You will just have to make do with 480p instead.

my Toshiba takes the 720p input signal from the xbox and displays it as 1080i. Are you sure your tv does not do this?

I am sure my tv does not do this. I just got dishnetwork HD installed and the HD box came configured in 720p out of the box and I got a double image that flashed green. I had to change the output to 1080i before I got a correct picture.
