They are right. It's only a first step. Next the movies themselves, so the warnings should be basically superfluous (never mind, add them anyway, won't hurt).
But really, I'm sooo waiting for each and every character depicted in a movie to be 200% politically correct, be an example for the kids us all and never being seen doing anything but a constant highly desirable social and personal behaviour. All the time.
Oh, and if a character does something undesirable, even something like scratching his/her crotch, alone or in public, let them die a well-deserved and terrible death, or at least be redeemed only after a very painful process.
Great movies, great entertainment times. Much to think about. And let's change the term "entertainment" to "enrichment"!
Seriously, let's accept for a moment that there is scientific evidence that exposure to smoking in films encourages cigarette use in real life (putting aside the fact that such studies may be flawed, or that other scientific studies may reach the opposite conclusion). Is there any sceintific evidence that exposure to anti-smoking PSAs discourages cigarette use? Without such evidence, this seems like a pointless gesture.
"BOSTON - Film industry veterans Bob and Harvey Weinstein will put anti-smoking video messages on DVDs of movies in which people smoke — a move sought by U.S. states to combat teen smoking.
"These messages will fight false film images of healthy and hip smokers with the real hard truth of addiction and disease," Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said in a statement Tuesday announcing the agreement.
Forty-one U.S. states, Puerto Rico, Washington D.C. and two U.S. territories last month sent free anti-smoking ads to the Weinstein Co. and 12 other movie studios in hopes of persuading them to include the messages."
Just one point on this subject. Why this particular art form? How about books? How about paintings in museums? How about a song on the radio that refers to smoking? How about requiring smokers on the street to wear this t-shirt, "Hey Kids! This person is not heathy or hip."
The aiming and shooting as performed in this game do not reflect the way you really handle your rifle in such cases. People also don't necessarily die exactly as depicted here.
Serious damage to your health can be inflicted by those able to retaliate before finally passing out. Also, the FBI may investigate your shooting incidents, possibly resulting in lawful persecution by legal authorities. This may involve your arrest by the police."
Most trailers and commercials (including anti-piracy ads which are much more near and dear to their heart) are skippable so I can't imagine why a PSA would be any different.
How about a warning on a pack of cigarettes saying that if you watch certain lame movies (insert name of movie) featuring the cigarettes you smoke, you are wasting your time and will never get those 90:00 minutes of your life back.
We have too many warnings and disclamers already. Leave this off the DVD.
