I got offered a Pioneer Elite VSX-43TX demo at my neighbourhood Pioneer dealer today for $1000 Canadian. MSRP on the Pioneer site is $1799, and their regular price for it was $1549. So my two questions that arise from this are:

1) How is the Pioneer Elite for music performance? (i.e. How does it compare to other receivers, such as NAD? The NADT752 can be had for ~$1300CAN). I listen to music for hours each day, but watch only a movie or two a week, so musical fidelity is of paramount importance.

2) Should I be getting a better price for this because it is a demo model for a product that is getting discontinued?

Thanks.

P.S. I'm assuming that THX certification isn't all that important, but please feel free to correct me if I have been misinformed...

I recently bought a new 43TX for $450 US from soundpros.com. The owner, Scott, is very knowledgeable and friendly and also runs the AV Perfection website that lists an 800 number that will get you in touch with him.

Worst case you might use this information for some leverage on price with "your" dealer. Best of luck!

For music go with something like NAD or Rotel, even if it means paying higher than the 43TX. You can also go to the used market for that. It will give you better long term satisfaction.

I had the Elite 45TX, 3803, NAD T762 and Rotel 1055 in my home. I preferred the Rotel and NAD for music. The NAD T752 might be more in your price range.

When doing the testing, I tried to level match as close as I could with a SPL meter. I did hear differences between them, contrary to other threads.

If you can, try to get the Elite and the NAD in your home so you can do your own comparisons.
