video switching/converting/upconverting are these units capable of? I am very interested in both of these units as well as the Onkyo 900 (898 replacement) & the Denon 3803, but will probably have to use the receiver as a video switcher due to an older tv.

The 47TX provides composite, svideo and high bandwidth component video switching (supporting HDTV), but does not provide conversion between the different signal formats. I believe that only the 49TX provides that function.

What about the 45TX? Does it provide the same "caliber" of switching? Is there any signal degradiation?

Brad:

I downloaded the 47 specs and compared to the 45. I'm not an expert in this stuff but the numbers were exactly the same for the all the different video stuff.
