I have read good reviews of the Cambridge SoundWorks MovieWorks systems. They start at $200 and go up to $2000.
I wouldn't buy their higher end stuff, but for the money the low-mid is suppose to be very good and blows the Bose away.

i own Cambridge Speakers only b/c they were free. :)
Josef- i say go back to Best Buy and pick up the JBL NSP1 speaker package along with the Sony SA-WM40 sub (thats the one they're referring to). if you'd like to save some $$, only get the sub at BB and order the JBL's from www.jandr.com for $299 (i think free shipping also, but it ends soon if not already).
i think you can start from there and work your way up. it'll be VERY tough to beat that system for the $$, and i think you'll be happy with it.
just my $.02

Josef,
May I make one more recomendation on speakers? If you are
willing to spend between $1000 and $1500.00 on a complete
package I have to recomend Acoustic Research Hi-Res Series
seperates. I would ask you to demo these in person before
you buy any other speaker. I would speficly compare them
to Definitive Technologies, Paradigm, Klipsch, Infinity,
Polk and various other good names in audio.
Then if you decide you want Hi-Res speakers from AR you
just click on over to http://www.etronics.com

I also recommend the JBL NSP1 setup with a Sony SA-WM40. It really is an outstanding HT combination for >$500.
JandR still has the NSP1 setup w/ free shipping for $299... click here.
You can pickup the Sony SA-WM40 for $149 + Tax at Best Buy.
Good luck
