Many of the shows I watched on TV last season featured many of the characters wearing shirts with jersey-style numbers on them. Is this just a fashion thing, or is there some logic behind the proliferation of them on TV?

I think it's a fashion thing.

But I noticed it mostly with younger people (teens, young adults, 20-35 year olds) only.

Buffy (had Dawn wearing them)
Gilmore Girls (I'm sure Loralai, and I think Rory did too)

just to name a few shows

I am sure it is a designer Mark Echo or something similar. They almost all have the #5 right?

*edit* After looking it up I am sure that I'm wrong, sorry.

This was a popular style among punk rock/modern rock stars that started around 97-98. I was at an Eve 6 concert in 98 and the lead was wearing one. They were selling them with their logo also. Shortly after that, I noticed more and more of them for sale, especially for younger girls/teens. Probably just a fashion thing. Not all of them have numbers though.
