I'm amazed (and thrilled) that The Irishman is getting a blu-ray release, and from Criterion no less!

To answer your quoted question - look back at the 3rd post where it was discussed...

(On a tangent).

The first paragraph in post #3 might not be entirely correct. Sony did indeed handle the dvd/bluray releases and some distribution, as mentioned in the link in my previous post.

Though who actually produced or owns the rights to House of Cards, is another question. On the surface it appears to be another company: Media Rights Capital.

Going by the title of this thread, the topic we're talking about is "Netflix produced movies," so those are what we're specifically referring to. Content they produce like "Stranger Things," not content they license like "House of Cards."

This is probably quite a lot more complicated, than simply who is the sole owner.

In the case of The Irishman, the ownership issues are very very convoluted.

I've written, emailed and phone-called them about this issue, specifically citing OKJA and MUDBOUND. "There are no plans at this time..." etc. Generic answer. We won't get better. I don't know that a petition would affect their policies, but even worse, I don't think we'd get all that many signatures. Sorry for the pessimism, but perhaps Criterion's ROMA release and the forthcoming IRISHMAN and MARRIAGE STORY is reason for hope, perhaps even for older titles.

Well, we might just succeed.

We can at least try.

Nevertheless, Netflix is being very smart by outsourcing some of their own movies to Criterion.

Especially if they don't want their productions ending up in the $5 dvd/bluray dump bins. I rarely ever see Criterion or Kino Lorber stuff in the local dump bins.

I'm guessing once all the "water cooler talk" time has come and gone for JoeSixpack or John/Jane Q Public about a particular movie Netflix owns (or partially owns), outsourcing it to Criterion is basically like an "afterlife legacy" which keeps it around for the hardcore crowd.

Even at the few local indie record/video stores still around which deal in second handed stuff, I have noticed Criterion titles still seem to be easily $10-$15 or higher for used copies in good condition.
