I need a new DVD player with progressive scan to replace my old Toshiba SD1200 DVD player. I have a Mitsubishi WS65713 HD RPTV. It was suggested to me to get the Denon 910 since it uses the Faroudja decoding chip. Are there any more players with good video in the under $300 range? I 'm not looking for all the bells and whistles just a solid video performance and decent sound.

Mitsubishi DD-8040 uses same Faroudja DCDi deinterlacer as Denon 910 and has DVD-A for $250. I have one and its a huge inprovement over my previous player, a mits dd-6030 (rebadged toshiba sd3800).

How long have you had the Mits and do you have any dislikes concerning it? I don't know too much about the Mits DVD players. Does it do DVD +/-R and RW?

Yes the Mitsubishi DD-8040 ($249) and the Denon DVD-910 ($299) both support DVD-R/-RW/+R/+RW discs. I tested both of them. The Mitsubishi has extra features like DVD-audio, but has flicker on edges of solid saturated color areas - the Denon doesn't have the flicker bug.

Don: I too want a better DVD player. DO you recommend Denon and if so which model is best for under $500. Why?
Thanks.

I'm also thinking of upgrading to possibly the Denon 910, but the Mitsu DD-8040 sounds interesting. How come the Mitsu is not listed on the Secrets Shootout? How does it compare to the Denon 910 and/or Panasonic XP30/RP82/Denon 1600?

Because the secret's guys only test a few models from ones that are loaned to them. They do plan on a Mitubishi model to test in the near future. But I checked the DD-8040 out and it appears to be the same design as the Denon DVD-910/1200 (the menu system looks identical) with a couple extra features. The older Panasonic XP30/XP50 models are still superior, I ended up buying a used XP30 myself.
