my friend needs advice on setting up his tv (1 Viewer)

he bought this sony 50 inch wega lcd and has just regular hookups and no settings change. what should he do to get the best pic? he has a sony dvd player and an xbox hooked up to it with rca hookups ? will the quality really be that big of a difference with different cables?
it was 2100 . it was an open box return

i was told he could get a dvd to help him set it up, where and how much?

DEFINITELY get component hookups for both the DVD player and Xbox (then you can run in HD). Turn off SVM in the menu on the Sony. Thats a start

Avia or Digital Video Essentials are the two most recommended DVDs. Sound and Vision DVD is similar to Avia (since the same company made both) is also good. All are available from any online DVD retailer. The place that sold the TV may have one also.
