The recent controversy over Moulin Rouge reminds me of the last "art" film that had a similar love/hate reaction: The Blair Witch Project. If there is something that causes you to immediately react negatively, then you probably won't be able to enjoy either film. I know that the low budge video of BWP turned many people off. FWIW, I did enjoy BWP, but was put off by MR. I do like musicals but this one left me cold. Maybe it's that the high budget visuals are so overwhelming that the music and drama seem out of proportion. Something in the mix that caused an immediate disconnect for me, and obviously, for many others.
