I just started reading this thread... but I second the Corian suggestion. When properly glued together, there is zero seam in the stuff. You can sand the seam down or route it out and will never tell it's there. When in your hands it has the feel of marble. I have seen "craft blanks" for sale on Ebay.

Joe: go figure. Good rosewood veneer is probably $150 nowdays for a 4' x 8' sheet. Check around.
