Is is possible to use a top grade media speaker system with a television based home theater system?

No, since the TV basically does no form of processing at all. You would be stuck with stereo.

There are PC speaker setups that include basic stereo/surround pre-amps. Klipsch, Creative, and Logitech come to mind. It would be possible to use these w/ a TV/DVD setup.
