Is Blu-ray at death's door? Innovative 1TB optical disc could be the future of physical media (1 Viewer)

Very interesting article.

With physical media in decline, I am wondering if this technology will make a difference

The problem with physical media is mostly lack of convenience compared to streaming and of course cost.
I cannot see how a 1TB disc would help much with cost but it might bring some benefits with regard to convenience with multi disc releases that could mostly be on one disc with such a medium, mainly series.

In any case this may be interesting for other use cases but not really for selling movies on a shiny disc.

Right off the bat, investing in this potential format would mean buying an expensive player and then baited to buy

Exactly.

While 1TB of storage would eliminate multi-disc sets, how many of us are ready to invest $$$ in hardware to support the playback of these discs?

I think all of us would be turned off to investing in another disc format -- especially with streaming being a cheaper option.

Looks like something geared to data archiving?

Limited data capacity isn’t the cause nor solution to the decline in the disc for home entertainment. Nor more than limited ink capacity in a pen is the cause of the rise of email and texting over handwritten letters.

As I said the benefits would be rather small and obviously they would be outweighed by multiple downsides so essentially a non-starter.

The biggest obstacle would already be to get some hardware and software companies behind it - who would actually invest any effort in a standard that would be a niche of a niche of a niche both with regard to software and hardware?

Hopefully nobody as right now we have a medium that can deliver substantially better quality than what we get most of the time.

This would be nice as some sort of recorder like my Panasonic dvd recorder i have to record stuff off my DirecTV service. Have been recording on to dvd for over 20 years but to get the best picture on the disc i was limited to 3 hours of recording time.

That was my first thought, too.
There may be some use for it in certain applications but I assume it would be quite rare.

Indeed, if capacity was an issue BD would have replaced DVD and then UHD would have replaced BD.

I don't think any new physical format will ever catch on with the masses. Too many now interested in watching YouTube and TikTok rather than movies, anyway.

UHD has not really expanded beyond a niche format, even among some of the membership here. Based on sales, most of the masses seem to be fine with DVD as a physical format, let alone blu-ray, UHD, or any newer (more expensive) innovation.

Remember when HD-DVD trumpeted the idea that porn exclusivity was going to make them win the format war?

...still waiting for that.
Well, I could never get anything other than a Star Trek Classic episode (or the DVD side of a flipper HD-DVD, DVDs and audio CDs) to play completely through on my Toshiba HD-DVD player ... not that length of play would necessarily be important for certain things ;)...

When any new format is introduced, it's always more expensive. I remember the first VHS players were very expansive for the times and so were the tapes. But, as time passed the prices went down and the selection of titles went up. The largest advantage of this format would definatly be in large TV series. Imagine Gunsmoke on 1 disc?!! It would be a boon for those invested into phyisical media. With these collections space is always at a premium. I remember when the first storage cubes over 1T first came on the market, and likewise these too came down in price.
Perhaps, rather than going with this disc format, transfer your physical media to a 6T storage cube for viewing and box the discs as masters? Anyway, it is a cool idea and I wish them well!!

Costco Used to sell 8TB external hard drives for about $150.00 or less with a coupon. I think the largest I saw the last time I was there (about 2 weeks ago was) 5TB. The cost on Solid State Drive has come down a lot. I would say 1 TB is too small to start a potential optical drive...

I'm just opening options for the medium. More than one way to skin a Blu ray, LOL!! 😉

BD and CD will live longer than anyone reading my reply. Trust me.
I hope you’re right. Rock enthusiast Eddie Trunk says CD is surging again in sales, coming close to vinyl sales these days.

I have been collecting films on disc since 1989- laserdisc, DVD, BluRay, and now UHD. As much as I have loved this hobby, and will still buy UHD/BluRay product, I am stopping with UHD. I agree with Clinton’s post that a new format just won’t take hold going forward.
