A somewhat tepid movie gets the full class treatment on UMD. Not the first, nor last time that’s happened before...

Thoughts on the Movie

What a strange movie. It’s basically a movie about a girl who moves to New York to find a career as a songwriter. She gets robbed, and finds a job at the Coyote Ugly, where the bartenders dance on the bars and splash their customers with their own beer (more on that in a sec). Later on some near tragic events happen, yada yada yada, she makes her dream come true. Oh, and a big spoiler alert for the previous sentence.

There are some occasional detours. For no reason at all, we go to a small baseball diamond where the Coyotes play some other team. How do they win? One girl strips down to her underwear and goes to bat. This is the only movie I can think of that makes baseball actually entertaining to watch. There is also many times where the movie’s star (Piper Perabo) moves her keyboard to the roof of her building and composes music. The roof looks uncannily like a music video set. And so on.

The Unrated version only gives us a nice bit of nudity during the sex scene with Piper Perabo and her boyfriend (Adam Garcia), but interesting thing about that scene: Perabo takes off her top, and then the scene cuts to her breasts, then back to her face, then a long shot of her nude, then her face, etc. Not only do these shots contain continuity errors (in some scenes where we actually see Perabo’s face her bra is half off, then off, then completely on), but you get the feeling they pulled the ol’ switcheroo and got a body double when we do see the goods. I know this from watching the scene multiple times, sometimes in slow motion. Such is the job of a UMD Movie reviewer... it’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it.

Video Quality

We get the movie in a 2.35 ratio, and it looks great. No one watches a movie like Coyote Ugly for the cinematography, but what’s there looks nice and sharp. The extras also look clear and nice.

4/5

Audio Quality

There wasn’t much the movie did with the audio, although thankfully the movie is much louder than other recent Buena Vista movies I’ve seen lately, especially the main menu. I can only think of one instance of fake surrounds (motorcycle drives into the scene) and what’s there sounds sharp.

Extras

We get quite a few extras here! First up, the menu and scene selection fits the movie perfectly, and looks great.

First up in the extras is a submenu called Coyote 101 that goes behind the scenes of the movie. In there we get A Place to Get Ugly (2:07), Calling the Shots (1:40), and Shakin’ It (2:54). These were all pretty informative, and enjoyable.

The last submenu are Additional Scenes, of which is Violet’s Goodbye (2:35), Driving with Gloria (:22), Stolen Goods (1:17), Lil’s Lesson (1:49), and Gloria & Violet (:49). Oddly these scenes are in a 4x3 ratio but need to be stretched using the PSP Fullscreen option to watch properly.

We also get two more features. Action Overload (1:07) defines the very meaning of the word “fluff,” and is terrible... just a collage of clips from the movie. Lastly is a Music Video by Leann Rimes (3:51) for the movie.

While many of the bonus features are fluff, there’s enough stuff to keep you satisfied in the long run.

3.5/5

Overall…

Fans of the movie will be very happy with this UMD. It has many of the special features of the DVD sans commentary, and a good video and audio presentation. For those who haven’t... your not really missing out on much.
