Hello,

Great review.

Speed Racer was a big favorite in Hawaii in the late 60's.
Just had never seen anything like it. I suppose if there
is an "American anime" contemporaneous to the times it
would be the original Jonny Quest series. Real guns and
bullets!

I've heard the original MGGG theme and I rather like it.
Either theme works for me. Probably because of licensing
rights I suspect it will be a long time, if ever, we see
a release of MGGG with subtitles anytime soon.

Anyone catch the Speed Racer episodes on HDNet?

Does anyone know if Artisan plans to release the rest of the episodes on DVD?

I quickly flipped through the extras and watched one episode. This looks and sounds more than acceptable for its age. I thought it might feel a little dated and gimmicky at first but it has held up well. At $12.99 it's worth it just for the packaging alone.

There is no word yet as to when we'll see the next volume. Artisan as a rule (like other studios...Columbia comes to mind) keeps their future releases very quiet and close-to-the-chest until THEY are ready to let US know. Often the first word can come from a print source (like Video Store Magazine), or just from an e-tailer listing it for the first time. Otherwise, we just gotta hope someone leaks it!

I've never read DVDToons' item on this before now, but I'm sure it was an oversight or a typo back when the first word leaked out about the release. I've never heard about anything but a 1-disc version of this release. You got the right thing.

Why can't I find this anywhere?? None of the stores of the company I work for have gotten it in, and I went to Best Buy and they had a display area but it was empty, I don't think they sold out of it that quick!

Thanks Dave, for the update. I look forward to getting the rest, my boys(& me:D ) are enjoying this first dvd.

MatS, I agree that for the price you can't beat them, even though they're kind of cheesy, it's an interesting nostalgia trip. I can't believe that my kids, who are used to the current crop of TV anime, are so into this.

I'm watching this set right now, and I'm loving it. OSL or not, it was definately worth the purchase... plus the rebate when I purchased the Young Guns SE DVD at the same time. :D

Hello,

The Speed Racer DVD was purchased. Generally I'm pleased
with the transfer. Since these US versions were edited
for the US it is probably safe to assueme that the
"originals" were copies of the Japan-produced series.
That's OK. Color is good and the defects not irritating.

From a preservation standpoint, however, the altering
of the main titles to reflect new owenership does
irritate me. It just isn't the same.

The only picture I could find on the internet of the
orignal title is here:

http://www.avelharia.hpg.ig.com.br/speed_racer.htm

Scroll down and you can see the screen shot (picture!)
of the original title.

Lest we forget Trans-Lux not Speed Racer Enterprises
introduced this series to US television.
