I've just bought the newly released TV versions of "Far From The Madding Crowd" and "Tess Of The D'Urbevilles" on Region 2 DVD. They are both presented in the 4:3 ratio but, judging by the screen compositions, I suspect that they were actually shot in 16:9 and probably broadcast in widescreen originally. Can anyone confirm this? If so, it's very disappointing that these DVDs have been released in the wrong aspect ratio.

I have off-air recordings of these. I'll dig them out and have a look - haven't watched them in ages. I was thinking of getting the DVD's so am interested in your comments.

I've had a look and they were both broadcast as 14:9, so if they have been cropped for the DVD then it will only be a slight difference over what was broadcast.

Out of interest, are they presented episodically or all edited together?
