I'm not sure why, but the Chicago Tribune decided this phenomenon was worth an entire article. It is interesting that so many quotable films were written by Harold Ramis, but they miss whole areas of quotable film like the Bond pictures, Star Wars, and the Terminator flicks. (Hell, SW and the Terminators even get quoted inside other movies.) Not to mention the whole gangster genre. If it weren't for The Godfather films, GoodFellas and Casino, certain guys I know would be virtually mute. :)

Joe

Movie quotes are definitely a large part of my friends and my vocabulary. Every conversation will have at least one.

The females around us just frown and shake their heads when one of us says "the snozzberries taste like snozzberries", and us guys break out into hysterical laughter. (the above quote is usually preceded by someone licking something)

A few friends of mine like to quote Caddyshack. When one of us says, "So I've got that going for me," someone else will invariably add, "Which is nice."

My sister-in-law LOVES that movie and quotes that line ALL the time. QUOTE]
Willy Wonka, or Super Troopers? We are, of course, referring to the Wonka referral in Super Troopers. ST didn't exactly have a female target audience meow, did it? :)

My friends love to modify quotes from National Lampoon's Vacation to use, such as what the car repairmen told Chevy Chase's character:

"I ain't never met anyone as ignorant as you are mister!"

and

"What is you? Ignorant?"

This is a huge line my friends and I use; I will try and say it to someone I don't know and they almost never get it.

My friends and I will sometimes throw out odd lines and a majority of the time one of us will nail it. I just used a Stroker Ace line and a buddy knew it, was quite impressed.

My friends Secretary is only 18 and she doesn't get a lot of the older classic lines, which is a shame b/c we have had some situations so perfect that had us laughing our @sses off and she just was like, I don't get it.

I haven't used that Snozzberry line for years now, looks like I will be throwing it out sooner rather than later.:)

It can be quite fun, sometimes dangerous.

"How much for de weemen?" - same scenario, but at a Disneyworld eatery. :b

I hate it when someone laughs hysterically at a movie/television quote I say then I have to tell them it isn't an original.

In fact, now that I think about it... rarely any of the funny things I say have any originality to them.... see my sig for a demo of this.

I hate it when I go to "teen movies" like American Pie and Old School, and I'm the only one laughing at the references to simmilar, but older movies, like The Graduate. Makes me feel old :frowning:

I probably quote Friends and X-Files more often than movies these days (thanks to owning season sets on DVD). The movie I quote the most is probably Princess Bride.

However, back in ancient history (late 80s), when playing D&D with a group of friends, we would endlessly quote and modify two movies:

Aliens - especially "I say we grease the ratf**k sonofabitch right now."

Big Trouble in Little China - especially "No horses**t Wang?" "No horses**t Jack."

There's something about Bill Murray's 80s classics - Caddyshack, Stripes, & Ghostbusters - these are absolute quote machines. My best friend & I can have half-hour conversations based completely on these three. :D

When he went to fill out his wedding license a few weeks ago, he actually did the "Da na na, da na na" bit from Stripes as he handed the pen to his fiancee to sign. And yet she went ahead and married him!! ;)

Yeah, I think that "something" is their scripts - all written or co-written by Harold Ramis. :) (Although, in fairness, Murray could and did ad-lib brilliantly within the written scenes - as Ramis points out in the article.)

Heh, yeah, the article does seem awfully centered around comedies, which struck me as peculiar since my friends and I almost always quote action movies at each other. Sometimes comedies, and Bill Murray stuff is definitely often used, but nowhere near as often. At this point, I think The Simpsons is the primary quote generator as comedies go :)

I think the most common sources for my group are The Untouchables, Commando, Braveheart, Goodfellas, My Cousin Vinny (ironically, despite Joe Pesci's presence it's Ralph Macchio and Marisa Tomei that get the most use), Total Recall (pretty much any movie that has Michael Ironside in it, actually)...mostly action movies :)
