Robert Wise
Billy Wilder
Luis Bunuel
Orson Welles - tough choice though

Wise and Altman are not exactly comparable though, they are not trying to do the same things with their films. Wise is a product of the studio system and made Hollywood studio films while Altman is the enfant terrible indie auteur type. I won't try to add anything to the argument since I still haven't seen most of Altman's 70's-80's work and dislike both MASH and Nashville.

MICHAEL CURTIZ - (Casablanca)

FEDERICO FELLINI - (8 1/2)

PRESTON STURGES - (Sullivan's Travels) - it looks like this is going to be a major travesty. Sturges' best directorial effort losing to Ford's worst (IMO of course). :frowning:

Abstain - as I can't decide between the two. This is truly a tie for me.

Lew, I think you underestimate Tarantino - he really is quite capable as a director. When he matures as a filmmaker, he could be a force to reckon with.

MICHAEL CURTIZ - (Casablanca)
ANDREI TARKOVSKY - (Andrei Rublev) -- most difficult matchup for me, so far. Two of my favorites, head-to-head.
FEDERICO FELLINI - (8 1/2)
JOHN FORD - (The Searchers)
