I still say that the original negative is priceless compared to any copy. Sure, it's important to make as good a copy as we can while the original negative still exists. I'd rather have a copy of the film than nothing at all. That said, I strongly believe that preserving the original film negative for as long as possible is the most important thing. We've come so far in the last few decades with digital technology. Someday, we may have a way of safely and accurately making copies with the same resolution and warmth as film. That day isn't here...yet.
