No news yet if FFXI will have a singleplayer mode. More than likely not as Square wants this to be a total MMORPG.
One good thing is that I read reports that Square is reconsidering the pay for play option and might make the game free.

That is the news story above. Don't know as to the validity of it yet.

I think FFXI is supposed to be totally online, so if you're not online, you might as well sell the game to someone else.

Square needs like 400k people to subscribe to be able to maintain the game, and if the fee is cheap and they are confident that they will break 400k people, they will probably lower the fee by a dollar or two.

Square has decided that FFXI will be free on PlayOnline!! They are hoping that this will push huge amounts of software, which I am sure it will help as I will now buy it where when it was pay to play I had no desire to buy.

My thoughts exactly. I am already paying for two online PC games. I would have skipped this altogether if it was not free. Now if indeed it is I will be most assuredly be picking it up.

Well, I'm about 18 hours into FFX and going through the Lightning plains now. What a great game! I don't think it's better than FF7 yet though. That is still the king of the FF games IMO.

Just one question though. How can I go back to places I've already visited? It seems to just be shoving me from place to place.

Thanks.

I'm about 1 hour in front of you and so far I haven't been able to go back but I heard that coming up there's an airship that you can travel around the world on

I haven't gotten there yet myself, so I can't say for certain, but I've read the game opens up near the end to allow you to visit previous locations. As the game progresses initially, you can't go back. Sucks when you realize you've overlooked an Al Bhed Primer!

AFAIK, the first 30 hours or so are VERY linear, then it opens up and becomes WAY better. Haven't played much of it (don't even own it) but I have read a lot on forums and such and talked to people who already beat the game.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be the case. Core Magazine get something wrong? That never happens...

Reports today are saying that PlayOnline itself will be free, but individual games will have a monthly fee.

Please forgive my stupidity.

I am ploughing through FFX right now and am wondering will FFXI be accesible online through an add on peripheral through Sony for the ps2? Or will it be PC? Cost?

FFXI will be online through a special PlayOnline modem (no details on compatibility with other modems) for the PS2 or through a regular PC modem (since it will be for PC, also).

Actually, I think FFXI is free, but PlayOnline costs money. So that fee will go to all online games by Capcom, Enix, and Square (since they have a partnership dealing with PlayOnline) that you own instead of a fee for each game.

No, the latest reports from Japan are saying that PlayOnline (*in Japan*) will be free, with monthly fees for access to specific games.

That's exactly the same model used for DoCoMo AFAIK.

How this relates to the USA launch is moot - until they announce firm details for North America, it's irrelevant IMO.

You're right, PlayOnline is free, but the commercial games require fees.

Just got FFX today...how exciting!

What is the official game play time for this game? I am about 30 some hours into it and it feels like the game is going to end soon. I hope not because I was hoping for like 60-80 hours.

Anyone know for sure?

I am sitting at about 51 hours right now, and while I could probably end the game, I am doing some of the various side quests to build my characters up further and get the most out of this game. Right now, I am pursuing getting the hidden Aeons and the ultimate weapons. I want to just walk over the end bosses when the time comes :)

I'm 69 hours in and not done yet. I've played a lot of Blitzball though, and have spent lots of time leveling up my characters.

A friend of mine beat it in 69 hours, but IGN said it would be around 86 hours average.

Anyone know what the max HP and MP are? I know you can go well above 9,999 HP and such, but what are the maxes?

Yeah, that seems about right. Based on where I am I would say the game would average 80-90 hours. If you get into it, you certainly get your money's worth! Kind of refreshing after playing a few great, but very short games (Max Payne, Jak and Daxter, Onimusha).

If a game was measured by its length (say $1 for every 6 minutes, like your average $20 video that lasts 2 hours) then I would say most games have fallen short, but FFX definitely makes up for them.

Even so, I try not to judge a game by its length, but by its overall value.

Anyhoo, FFX rocks. Love the battle system.

I'm just over 30 hours, just finished at Remiem Temple (going back later) and I got the thing that you get after getting 0:00 at the chocobo racing thing. Can anyone tell me if this game is going to get any better than it already is, because that is near impossible right about now!

How far is everyone? Just curious. For those who have beaten the game, how is it in retrospect?
