In the Philippines when I was a kid, we would catch common house spiders and put them in small matchboxes. We would then take them out and onto a stick to fight another spider. Usually the loser is the spider that spins web to get off the stick after a skirmish but most of the time, the winner finds the web and actually cuts it, making the loser drop to the ground.

My dad told me the same story. He told me that story after laughing at me when I jumped at the sight of a garden spider

my brother showed me that. first he soaked a cotton ball in tabasco sauce, had the spiders drink it to rile them up, put both in a matchbox with a makeshift paper wall in between, then removed the wall and we heard a bunch of scratching sounds. When they died down we'd open up the box to see who the winner was.
