    EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITY WITH CRITERION

Home Theater Forum and its membership have been given an exclusive opportunity!

On July 2nd, Sam Posten and I will be heading to New York City, home of Criterion Films, to conduct a video interview with Lee Kline, their Technical Director.

The interview will be posted on Home Theater Forum, its YouTube channel and an upcoming HTF podcast featuring Sam Posten and Brian Dobbs.

Here is how you can help: Tell us what you want to know!

    1. Within this thread, each member will be able to ask questions to Criterion.

    2. Although Criterion has agreed to answer a few questions about movie choices and upcoming releases, based on the nature of Mr. Kline's position, we would prefer questions about tech, mastering, 4k, color, sound, and streaming (including their new Criterion Channel). Those are the questions that will probably be picked first over others.

    3. No discussion in the thread. Only posted questions will be allowed in order to make it easier for us to compile them. Any discussions will be deleted.

    4. Please include at your first or full name with the question if you want it included when we use it.

There is no guarantee your question will be used. If you already see your question posted, please do not duplicate in another post.

We will close this thread in late June so we have time to compile them.

Question: Does Criterion have any plans for releasing titles on disc in 4K UHD, or streaming in 4K on The Criterion Channel?

Assuming you still retain the rights (or can reacquire the rights) is the plan to upgrade ALL the prior titles released on DVD or Laserdisc?

Or are there some titles that you won’t rerelease even if the rights are available?

The Criterion Collection semi-circle "C" logo at the beginning of the disc. Any plans to change or update it?

Why is Criterion not creating new commentary tracks anymore?

Any chance of upgrades to SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE & FIRES ON THE PLAIN?

    Many thanks!

Does Criterion have any plans for more Paramount titles to enter the collection in the near future, assuming that they still have a deal to release a few titles?

On the new streaming service Criterion Channel, are there any plans to upgrade the sound format to at least 5.1? As it stands now it is only 2.0.

Does Criterion have any plans to release the recently restored George Cukor's "Holiday" (1938), Jack Clayton's "Room at the Top" (1959), or Ken Russell's "The Music Lovers" (1970) anytime in the foreseeable future? Thanks!

What happened to the Sixteen Candles release that you were working on back in late 2016/early 2017? Also any news of a Ferris Bueller's Day Off release?

Question: How much work, on average, does Criterion have to do on improving the image and sound quality of the masters they receive from the rights-holders? Has a planned release ever had to be scrapped because the materials that were made available simply weren't up to the standards of Criterion and couldn't easily be "fixed?" (You don't need to name specific films, as I know you have to be diplomatic.)

While the restoration and supplementary work of Criterion is exemplary, there has been concern over the authoring/compression of many of your titles. Often, overseas versions on Blu-ray using the same source restorations have been released that look noticeably better than your releases due to higher quality compression (MULHOLLAND DRIVE and THIEF both come to mind), and there's been concern over some discs being "overstuffed" with HD content (BLUE VELVET). Is there any chance that Criterion will take a look into improving the authoring/compression side of things so the final product released to the public truly matches the superb work that went into the the initial restoration stage?

I've heard a recent rumor more than once about a Criterion edition of Brokeback Mountain in the works. Is this rumor true?

Does Criterion have any plans to release Abel Gance’s Napoleon, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, Omar Khayyam, Porgy and Bess, The Scarlet Pimpernel or The Tales of Hoffmann (the 2015 restored version)?

Question: I realize this is a question about films, but do you plan on releasing previous OOP titles like Pandora's Box? Which I believe got a new restoration last year.
