If they updated all the effects George Lucas style I might be interested in watching, but I found the film a bit of a slog the first time around.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this new, massive version of Lynch's DUNE from Koch Films that was just recently released: https://shop.kochfilms.de/de/dune-d...on-4k-uhd-5-blu-rays-exklusiv-koch-films-shop. Koch won't ship this to the States, but as I'm living for a year in Paris, I was able to get it shipped to me here as I'm in the EU. Notably, it includes my preferred cut of Lynch's DUNE, the "Spicediver" version, which was a work of love by a deep fan of Lunch's DUNE. IMHO, it is the best and only version I will watch as this fan has taken the available cut scenes and brilliantly re-edited them into the film. He basically threw the Alan Smithee extended version in the trash and made a much more coherent, non-repetitive extended version. Now that it has been officially released, the "Spicediver" version can be discussed here, as prior to now it was clumped in with other fan edits as just another unauthorized "fan edit." Having said that, I would be extremely interested in a proper Lynch recut. I was extremely disappointed in the studio-released version when I saw it in 1984. I knew how much had been cut and how this film could have been sooo much better. Cutting the death of Thufir Hawat at the conclusion was in and of itself a major tragedy. I didn't blame Lynch for his reaction to the released version, but I'm glad that he's considering revisiting the film. In regards to the new DUNE, I was able to see it in IMAX and found it to be a wonderful new version. I particularly enjoyed the new version of the Baron and did find him much more acceptable than Lynch's way-over-the-top version. As a fan of the DUNE books and the movies, it's a wonderful time to be a DUNE fan.

How on earth is this even possible? A fan edit released officially with the official version?! What's the story behind it?

It's definitely uncommon but Universal already released a fan edit on Arrow's release of Waterworld. Also, they clearly don't care about Lynch's thoughts on Dune since they made the TV cut in the first place and have released it multiple times so why not a fan edit too? I'm sure the hardcore fans appreciate its inclusion which helps sell some copies.

Did not know about the Waterworld. So it has happened before. This blows my mind. It's fascinating to me to know how they do it. Does the studio recreate the fan cut with their high definition sources or they release an "inferior" video quality and accept it as it is.

My guess is that the label takes the footage provided by Universal and then makes all the additions or changes done in the fan edit so their cut in HD or 4K quality when possible.

Raising Cain is another example of a fan edit popping up on an official release. That's also a Universal picture.

I did not know this had happened with Dune but I know of one other picture that got an official release that included a fan edit, and interestingly, the fan edit was better than the theatrical version. Brian De Palma's picture Raising Cain was released on blu with the theatrical cut and a new fan edit which follows how De Palma was said to have wanted to cut the film. De Palma is a fan of the fan edit and I think it is a far better cut of the film than the theatrical.

I think I have that. I'll have to look at the fan cut, maybe, sometime.

If you're familiar with the theatrical cut, it's actually pretty interesting to see the movie rearranged.
I saw it in the theater on release, and again 2-3 years ago when I got the special edition BR. I can't say I've seen it any other times.

I have the Scream Factory 2 disc set. Funny that it doesn't mention on the box that it's a "fan" cut. Just that it's the "Director's Cut". I honestly have no idea which one I watched when I got the BR set. It's not like I actually remember the movie clearly enough from the late '80s when I saw it last.

The recut began as a fan edit. From Wikipedia:

A Collector's Edition Blu-ray of the film featuring the director's cut as well as the theatrical cut was released on September 13, 2016. The director's cut features scenes that are reorganized as originally intended. The cut was originally edited by Peet Gelderblom, a director from the Netherlands and a long-time De Palma fan, who found out De Palma had regrets about the theatrical cut, re-edited the film to more closely resemble the original script and posted the result on IndieWire in January 2012. De Palma came across Gelderblom's edit and was impressed by it, and successfully arranged to have the cut added to the Blu-ray release.[16]

Yes, since the fan edit was meant to follow how De Palma had wanted to cut the film and De Palma liked the edit, I suppose you can call it a "director's cut" and the way to tell which one you are watching or watched is in the director's/fan edit the scenes are not cut together in a straight chronological timeline as they are in the theatrical cut. It has been a while since I watched it but seeing the new cut of the picture I thought, "Oh yeah, this makes a lot more sense."

To me it took an interesting but somewhat flat film and made it seem much more like a crazed De Palma film. I enjoyed it much more in the new cut.

I believe the story was they did not like the way De Palma wanted to cut the film and felt it would be too confusing and so they just recut it into something that played like a straightforward timeline. I actually think the new cut improves everything, including the performances as they have more impact in the new cut. It's definitely the way to view the film, I think.

I've just watched the new documentary, 'The sleeper must awaken' on the Arrow Streaming service.
There's a lot about casting, but I don't feel that much else of it is new... :(

In regards to my comments on the "Spicediver" fan edit on the recent Koch release, it appears to be a 720p upres of the 480p Spicediver edit. It is very watchable, but certainly can't compare to the official blu-ray releases. But, the additional scenes properly integrated into the movie make it a much superior viewing experience. It's worth the effort if you can get it. There are ways, of course, but I can't go into them here, other than by getting the Koch release. Ebay has both of these up right now: https://www.ebay.com/itm/384232027720? and https://www.ebay.com/itm/175247176474?hash=item28cd8bb31a:g:jz4AAOSw4eFiXOlb.

Basically, with the potential that Lynch could do a new cut of the film, I don't want to pay a lot of money to see the fan edit. My feeling on the picture is it is an interesting failure. What I am curious about is how much less of a failure can Lynch recutting the film with about an hour of new footage make it?

Just few posts above I already posted a youtube link to the Spicediver fan edit. It is upscaled to 4K. You can watch it right now in 4K.
