Love "The Genius". My favorite comedy writer too and great casts. William Demarest is consistently hysterical.

*1. Sullivan's Travels - A (all-time top 10)
*2. The Lady Eve - A (seen on film, awesome to see Sturges magic still work so well on a fresh crowd. Probably my favorite romantic comedy, Stanwyck is luminous and incredibly sexy, plus it has cards/gambling, always a plus with me.)
*3. Hail The Conquering Hero - A (Terrific celebration of the soldier and hilarious skewering of politicians)
*4. Christmas In July - A (very light, but a perfect comedic house of cards that just builds and builds and builds)
*5. The Palm Beach Story - A- (Everything until they meet the rich guy is comic gold, but after they're off the train and in the mansion, I think this one loses steam and drops off)
*6. The Miracle Of Morgan's Creek - B+ (Fantastic for just about anyone else, but I didn't find this one nearly as funny/good as I thought I would. Liked it more the 2nd time though)
*7. The Great McGinty - B+ (Wasn't nearly as funny the 2nd time and Hail is more politically astute. He's still finding his way here and his leads aren't as good as what he would work with later. His stock company is terrific right off the bat though. Especially Demarest, who as I've always said, is the key actor to Sturges' genius run.)
*8. The Great Moment - B+ (Different and the same. Undeserved of criticism's though, this is a solid biopic, but Sturges manages to infuse it with some comedy as well. A bio-comedy? Hey, it works, and is actually moving as well by the ending. Joel McCrea is very good here as is Demarest as always)
9. Unfaithfully Yours - B (No Demarest and not enough contribution from the supporting cast.)

Own - 8

The Miracle of Morgan's Creek (1944) - :star::star::star::star:
The Palm Beach Story (1942) - :star::star::star::star:
Sullivan's Travels (1941) - :star::star::star::star:
The Lady Eve (1941) - :star::star::star:

Ranking:
  1. The Miracle of Morgan's Creek - Love every cotten pickin moment of this absurdly hysterical situation, comic genius!
  2. Palm Beach Story - Had me howling in laughter the whole way through!
  3. Sullivan's Travels - Better the second time and works wonderfully on film
  4. The Lady Eve - saw a long time ago (about four years) and really need to rewatch, was probably my first henry Fonda film.

Strangely enough, although I love Sturges' work in general, I've yet to have a completely satisfying viewing experience with any of his films: unwisely, I chose to watch my Criterion DVD of SULLIVAN (for the first - and only - time so far:frowning:) during a festive period for my hometown and, consequently, I was disturbed by the incessant sound of petards going off in the distance; both my two viewings of MIRACLE were of Italian-dubbed versions:frowning:; although my rating (and ranking) may not reflect that, I was somewhat underwehemlmed by EVE; likewise, I've only watched UNFAITHFULLY, CHRISTMAS and McGINTY only once and in Italian:frowning:!, etc...

I'll eventually be purchasing THE MIRACLE OF MORGAN'S CREEK and the R2 Preston Sturges Box Set for THE PALM BEACH STORY (1942), HAIL THE CONQUERING HERO (1944), THE GREAT MOMENT (1944) and the Terry Jones Audio Commentary on SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS.

Obviously, I'd also welcome a chance to watch Sturges' maligned last effort THE DIARY OF MAJOR THOMPSON (1955).
