I’m getting a new receiver mostly for playing movies, though also some regular TV and sports, and using Dolby Vision and Atmos 7.1 / 5.1.2 (including Height Virtualization).

These units seem to be similar except the Yamaha has:
8k and upscaling to 4k (Denon is 4k and no upscaling)
100 watts per channel (Denon is 80 watts per channel)
is 2020 model (Denon is 2019)
is around $100 cheaper than the Denon
but, the Yamaha has a lower user rating (4 stars vs 4.5 stars on Crutchfield & 3.9 vs 4.6 on Amazon)

I also considered the Denon AVR-S950H-R but it doesn’t have the Zone 2 outputs (RCA I believe) I need to connect to my outdoor speakers (through an old receiver) I use when entertaining on my porch.

So, any thoughts on which way to go? Of course, I’m always open for another option around the same price if there’s a better value.

For what it’s worth, I have two old Denon receivers which both work well (1991 AVR-810 and 2004 AVR-1804), so I am pretty fond of the brand.
