My receiver is a few years old but works ok. I just acquired a turntable with the traditional red and white RCA pin plugs but there is no connection in the back of the receiver for this. Or a ground wire. I looked at a couple of used receivers for sale and same thing-no input for a turntable.

Am I behind the times on something? Can you buy 4 channel receivers with turntable/phono imputs?

All you need is an inexpensive turntable preamp. Connect the TT to the preamp input, then the preamp output to any vacant input your receiver has available.

You need a phono preamp to do all the fun RIAA EQ stuff and give you line-level output. The days of this circuit always being included in stereo equipment has long since passed.
