Has this ever happened to anyone else?
I bought a used Pioneer CLD-3070 LaserDisc unit ten days back from a local dealer, because it had digtal out and double side play, and I really like how this model's put together. I paid way more than I would except that it had a 90 day warranty, which is for things like this as good as forever; and now it looks like I'm going to need it. I've been running the player ~2 hrs daily for the past week, to test it for temperment. As I finished my last disc tonight, the machine started making a THUMP-THUMP-THUMP noise as the disc spun down -- it sounded like the laser head got jammed around behind, while moving back to the Side A position. I unplugged it, plugged it back in, got the disc out [undamaged, thank God], and then had to force the disc tray back in and unplug the unit as it had begun thumping again. This failure mode is just so dtrange that I wondered if anyone else has ever heard of such a thing.
