don't know if you want to count it as wisdom but here goes:

xlr: use first if available...if not available use:

digital cable: use if your pre-pro has better quality dac's than your cd player

rca cable: use if your pre-pro's dac's are not as good as the dac's in your cd player or if you have an outboard dac.

most XLR uses AES/EBU standard, not S/PDIF although at least 50% of the the XLR output can be toggled between S/PDIF and AES/EBU
