I just received my HK avr 230. I hooked it up, got it set up and was quite pleased. That is until I popped in SW ep 2. The receiver is supposed to recognize EX encoded material however, when the movie started, the panel displayed "EX-OFF". Everything I tried I could not get the EX to go on. So over to the movies:

Would not recognize EX:
Toy Story 2
Monsters Inc.
Star Wars ep I & II
The Exorcist (version you've never seen)

Would recognize EX:
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Finding Nemo
Butterfly Effect Directors cut

Equipment used:
Toshiba 40h80 Monitor
Toshiba SD3750 DVD
Harmon Kardon avr 230
DVD is hooked up via component and Optical cables.

Now this seems very strange to me. I would have thought that either it works or it doesn't. The rear surround (6th channel) is being used but the receiver still says EX-OFF. Has anyone else had this problem?

Do I have a defective receiver? DVD player? Or could it be the optical cable?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is a very well known situation. Some EX movies are incorrectly flagged and do not tell the receiver to use EX. You should be able to manually turn it on for any of these movies.

The display pannel on the the receiver reads
D Digital EX
321 EX OFF

So does this mean that EX is on or off?

The display will read DIGITAL EX for any DD movie

What does your manual say? That display may not mean what you think it means.

Since you say it displays for all DD movies, that may mean you have it "forced" on, and it will perform EX processing on everything this way.
