Attn Tree Lovers: Need info on pruning (1 Viewer)

I have a medium sized cherry tree in my front yard. Some of the branches that have come out off the main trunk are pretty low and the branches that hang from them are only four or five feet off the ground...lower if the cherries are still on the tree. Anyhow, I'd like to trim some of these smaller branches because I'm tired of almost putting an eye out every time I mow the lawn. Can I do this without killing the tree and is there any trick to how I prune the branches?
