I was on price watch this morning doing my daily updates on price shopping and noticed the Athlon XP 2200 had hit $199, I thought hot damn its going to be upgrade time very very soon.
This evening, retailers across the board on pricewatch have lowered prices by 20 to 25% making the lowest price around $154 bucks!
$154 for a 1.8GHz cpu is INSANE!
My 700 is really REALLY feeling the age, now if I can just convince the wife! :D
Also all the rest of the prices in the XP line also got the ax as well!
This is from the current pricewatch.com listing and include shipping prices from the various vendors!
$154 Athlon XP 2200
$129 Athlon XP 2100
$103 Athlon XP 2000
$90 Athlon XP 1900
$76 Athlon XP 1800
$68 Athlon XP 1700
$60 Athlon XP 1600
It's a great time to be looking for upgrades!

Yep, sometimes I wish I'd have waited a few month before I bought my MSI k7t-proa MOBO ... I bought It in January 2001, by the end of March newer boards with support for DDR ram and the "new" XP processors

NOW I'm waiting for new K7 based MOBOs with support for DDR400.

Could be awhile(I've heard Feb/Mar of 2003)

I think I'll upgrade my Duron 750 to 1200/1300 for now though.

And here I am sitting with an Athlon XP 1800+ when I could have gotten the 2200 just by waiting a couple more months for the price drop! Argh! Oh, well, I did learn how to build a PC in the process so that's all well and good. :D :emoji_thumbsup:

Not much of a drop in the XP1800, if any at all. Maybe the cut was on the top cpus? Anyhow, I can't see why anyone would go with an Intel chip over an Athlon these days.

From an overclockers standpoint, the newer stepping XP1600+ are the sweet spot; they sell for around $60 shipped, and can hit 1900-2000+ speeds with ease, with 2100-2200+ being not too uncommon.

On a semi-related note, I saw the ATI Radeon 9000 128MB for under $100 earlier tonight. Am I missing something or is this way underpriced? I thought the 9000 was over $200.

This is getting funny.
Current price is $148.94
3 different vendors have been undercutting each other all day by a penny. :D

Don't forget, if you get an Athlon, you're probably going to have to have a 350W Power Supply, and at least one additional fan, because the new Athlons run really HOT.

I'll suffer with my 400mhz comp till Doom3 comes out. I mean who needs a comp that can render Toy Story in 5 seconds when all I need is this glorified typewriter:D
Also whats the minimum power supply for XPs? I might break before Doom3 comes out...

I've got an Enermax 365 for my 2100+ - works great. 300+ is fine, as long as it's a good power suppy (Acer & Enermax are both pretty good.)

I'm running on a 300w PS. What I'm powering:

WD 7200rpm 18gb IDE
WD 7200rpm 40gb IDE
Seagate 10k rpm 18gb SCSI
Seagate 10k rpm 18gb SCSI
DVDrom
CDRW drive

I haven't had one problem with my power supply not being powerful enough to do the job. It came with the AOpen case (the huge 2.5' one) that I ordered with it.

Make sure this 2200s are new throughbird core or you'll get screwed.. a little. And as always - be careful with pricewatch. Low prices meens nothing unless they are from respectful reseller.
