By the end of this year, our collections will be plump. I can estimate that I'll be ahead by about 50 DVDs by New Years. That's a lot of money, but there'll won't be much more to buy.

Norm,
That is one heck of a movie list!
I too am waiting to see titles like Soylent Green and the rest of Chuck Heston's post-nuclear theme flicks, the other Dirty Harry movies (Magnum Force, et al), a brand spanking new HD anomorphic master (with its original directional stereo sound, just like the laserdisc version has) from a fully restored The Wind And The Lion (yeah, sure), and many others to be released on DVD.
Hope movie studios let up their lethargy and do these movies soon!...

I am usually very picky when it comes to buying DVDs. I rarely find one or two must-haves each month. But I already have these titles on pre-order (thank God I am not a horror fan or DePalma fan).
A Place in the Sun (8/14)
Silence of the Lambs: SE (8/21)
Sullivan's Travels (8/21)
Marathon Man (8/28)
Memento (9/4)
The Vanishing (9/18)
Cape Fear - 1962 (9/18)
Blood Simple (9/18)
Citizen Kane (9/25)
French Connection (9/25)
Terminator: SE (10/02)
Godfather Collection (10/09)
Notorious (10/16)
Lady Eve, The (10/16)
On the Waterfront (10/23)
From Here To Eternity (10/23)
Doctor Zhivago (11/6)
Rebecca (11/13)
I am trying real hard to resist the temptation to pick up Forrest Gump, Cape Fear - 1991, Gandhi, Basic Instinct, Total Recall, French Connection II, etc. I would have picked these up without any hesitation if I already did not have so many titles on pre-order (nearly 20 titles in a 3 month period is a new record for me !).

Due to the fact I am a rather short on cash due to not having a job, but instead get an allowance, plus the added weight of building my collection that started recently, I am still going to be getting a lot these coming months. I am expecting getting Goonies and possible Fantasia Anthology next week(yes, that box set is old, but it is getting pulled off soon).
After that, I will get Silence of the Lambs, possible Hannibal, Godfather trilogy(even so I never watch it before, but know it good), Simpson box set, Wizard of Oz(yes, another old title coming back), Snow White, Phantom Menace, Tron SE, and various other titles that appear during that time, while dealing with buying new Playstation 2 and GBA titles, plus the Gamecube(probably going to Christmas for me).

Yeah, its gonna be rough. I think all I'm gonna do is pick up everything before november.
Gump
Princess Bride
Simpsons
Terminator:SE
Destiny in Space (IMAX)
Fiddler on the Roof:SE
SW: TPM
Snow White + my free Disney DVD
Then I'll just make out the longest Christmas list I've ever written and hope for the best. I just can't justify spending too much money on myself when I should be shopping for others this time of the year (that's my way of saying my wife wouldn't let me :) ).

Remember back in 1997 when there were like 30 launch titles and a promise of over a 100 by the end of the year? And only 4 studios were supporting DVD? We all clamored for more studio support and more film releases on DVD.
This just illustrates the old proverb: Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it!
Woo-hoo, I may go broke, but damned if I won't be watching some great movies on the way down!

I CANNOT believe that nobody is listing Kramer vs. Kramer! Is there something wrong with it? I've been looking forward to that title for YEARS!!!
Anyway, here is my way-overblown list of "must-haves". I've even taken a few off that I'm not thinking are worth listing here...like kid's titles such as "Teletubbies" and "DragonTales", and music titles like the Queen re-issue. Well, I hope I get a bunch of cool stuff for Christmas! :)

Note that I have to add some newly announced titles to the above list. "The Toy", for instance. "Best of Friends Vol 3 & 4" will NOT end up on the list, though...nor will Lord of the Rings or, of course, Wonka. In fact, all WB titles on the above list are TBD, pending satisfaction over the various issues with their decisions regarding OAR and Season-by-season episodes vs. best-of sets.

I was actually going to post something on the forum last week about this.
I have recently come to realise that I cannot own all of the DVD's I would like to. It used to be the case that I could buy 3 or maybe 4 a week and those were all the ones I would want to buy.
Every now and then there would be a slow week and this would allow me to catch up with the things I had missed in the previous weeks - no longer!
There now seem to be 5 or 6 titles I would like to own almost every week. I can no longer keep up but still love it. Keep 'em coming please.

Don't you guys find yourselves saying, "Dang, I have all the catalog titles I need now... I can just start buying the NEW movies I like"? I mean, when I got "Tootsie," I thought, "there, I have everything I need." Then, MGM does a new SOTL. The Carrie SE is announced. Fox suddenly releases two other Brian De Palma favorites that I honestly thought would forever live on LD. And then the damn Heathers SE. And wouldn't you know it, after I got the Godfather greens on LD for Christmas last year, they go and put those on DVD.
Not that I'm complaining, but how long can I keep promising my wife that "really, honey, after Christmas 2001 I should have all the catalog titles I need..."
I think she knows I'm just "wonk"ing her.

I have modified my buying strategy to snap up the limited editions (Suspiria, Wicker Man, Maniac, Total Recall red ass-moon version) and chill out on the ones I can find at Best Buy. I am a huge Universal Monster fan and had all of the new double features on pre-order, but used what little control that remains to cancel it and buy one every week or two before Halloween.
Somehow, I slapped myself into remembering my priorities (and salary!): 15 mo. child, 2nd due 1/3/2002, new house closing next month, wife's maternity clothes, then movies!
Before kids, it was movies, movies, movies.
I guess I am finished

I got a great coupon for Amazon during their free shipment window, but now all my cheap DVDs are held hostage until they can ship at the same time. So I have basically nothing coming in until two Tuesdays and then I get a flood!
