I'm a big believer in some sort of Download replacing rentals in the next few years. But I don't want to pay $4.99 or so per show. I'd much rather have an all-you-can-eat monthly fee. Like Netflix, but download instead of physical disc delivery.
For most households with broadband, the bandwidth issue is already solvable. The system should be downloading the show in advance of the user watching it, via the queue that the user has set up. Netflix already knows the next movie I want to watch -- rather than sending it to me in the mail it could start dl'ing it now, and thus whenever I get around to actually watching it, it'd be ready for me.
Of course, for full on-demand streaming of anything, more bandwidth is needed, but my point is that a downloadable Netflix-like system is possible today, with today's technology.
