THE ABC TELEVISION NETWORK ANNOUNCES IT WILL BROADCAST
ITS PRIMETIME ENTERTAINMENT SERIES IN HDTV
ABC Television Network President Alex Wallau announced today that ABC will broadcast all of its scripted primetime entertainment programs in high definition television (HDTV) this season.
All of these programs will use 720 Progressive (720P), ABC’s selected HDTV format. ABC is the only network to broadcast its HD programming in Dolby Digital 5.1 channel surroundsound.
In addition to “NYPD Blue,” which became ABC’s first regularly-scheduled entertainment series to be broadcast in high-definition last season, the series to be broadcast in HD include “Dharma & Greg,” “Spin City,” “ Philly,” “My Wife and Kids,” “The Drew Carey Show,” “Thieves,” “Once and Again,” “The Practice,” “What About Joan,” “Bob Patterson,” “According to Jim,” “The Job,” “The Court,” “The Web,” and “Alias.”
ABC also broadcast more than 40 theatrical movies in HDTV last year, and will continue to do so for the 2001-2002 season.
“We’re very committed to doing HDTV programming, and broadcasting most of our primetime series in HD is a terrific way to showcase this technology,” said Mr. Wallau.
ABC began broadcasting high definition television, including Dolby Digital 5.1 channel surround sound, on November 1, 1998, with the theatrical presentation of “The Wonderful World of Disney: 101 Dalmatians.”
Since then ABC has broadcast a number of theatricals in HDTV, as well as numerous sporting events, including the first live, regularly scheduled HDTV sporting event in primetime, 1999-2000 season of “Monday Night Football.” ABC has also broadcast the Super Bowl XXXIV and the 2000 National Hockey League All-Star game in HDTV.

This is great news for 720p. I like 1080i, but it is no 720p. Hopefully if more material is broadcast in 720p, we'll see more consumer sets supporting the scan rate when the 2003 sets come out in a year.

This "press release" was also posted in the HDTV Programming forum at AVS Forums. Another member called Susan Sewell, who is a Media Relations Contact at ABC and she disavowed this as being an official press release.
There is no record of this "press release" at the official ABC Press Release web site.

From the HDTV Programming forum moderator at AVS Forum:
"To all AVS Forum Members,
In case you missed it, a draft press release from ABC was posted here earlier today. Unfortunately, it was not authorized by the network and it has been subsequently deleted by the member who posted it.
I spoke with ABC directly this afternoon, and they did provide the following information, to help clarify the issue.
At this time ABC has no new information regarding their HDTV plans. They do expect to have a press release in the next week to 10 days outlining their HDTV plans for the 2001-2002 TV season. They did want us to know they are working on adding additional programing and that high level network executives are behind this effort.
As soon as additional information is available, we will be among the first to know. Please do not bombard them with calls, for there is nothing else they can add at this time.
Thanks for your cooperation.
Ken"

Here is the now official press release
IN A MAJOR COMMITMENT TO HDTV PROGRAMMING, ABC ANNOUNCES IT WILL
BROADCAST ALL OF ITS PRIMETIME COMEDIES, DRAMAS AND THEATRICALS IN HDTV
THIS SEASON
In a major commitment to high-definition television programming, ABC
Television Network president Alex Wallau announced today that ABC will
broadcast all of its primetime comedy and drama series, as well as all
theatrical movies, in HDTV for the 2001-02 television season.
ABC was the first network to broadcast in HDTV, beginning in November,
1998, and it is the only network currently broadcasting its HD
programming in Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound. All of ABC's
programs will use 720 Progressive (720P), ABC's selected HDTV format.
"ABC is totally committed to bringing the best possible viewing
experience to our audiences through HDTV technology," said Mr. Wallau.
"ABC's Fall programs are an especially powerful way of showcasing the
amazing technology of HDTV."
The announcement will bring the total number of hours that ABC is
broadcasting in HDTV to more than 60% of its primetime schedule. In
addition to 'NYPD Blue', which became ABC's first regularly scheduled
entertainment series to be broadcast in high definition last season, the
series to be broadcast in HDTV include 'Dharma & Greg', 'Spin City',
'Philly', 'My Wife and Kids', 'The Drew Carey Show', 'Thieves', 'Once
and Again', 'The Practice', 'What About Joan', 'Bob Patterson',
'According to Jim', 'The Job', 'The Wonderful World of Disney', 'The ABC
Big Picture Show', 'The Court', 'The Web', and 'Alias'.
Since it began broadcasting in HDTV in 1998 and through November of this
year, ABC will have broadcast 71 theatrical titles in HDTV. This
includes more than 40 theatrical movies in HDTV last season. The network
will continue to broadcast all theatricals in HDTV for the 2001-02
season.
The first HDTV broadcast of the new season will be the one-hour season
premiere of 'Dharma & Greg' on September 18, from 8:00-9:00 p.m.
ABC began broadcasting high-definition television, including Dolby
Digital 5.1-channel surround sound, on November 1, 1998, with the
theatrical presentation of 'The Wonderful World of Disney: 101
Dalmatians.' Since then ABC has broadcast many other theatricals in
HDTV, as well as numerous sporting events. Those events include the
first live, regularly scheduled HDTV sporting event in primetime, the
1999-2000 season of 'Monday Night Football'. ABC has also broadcast
'Super Bowl XXXIV' and the '2000 National Hockey League All-Star Game'
in HDTV.

okay, so now that it's finally released, now what happens? I am purchasing a Hitachi 53UWX10B today.. What do I need to be able to view the HD feeds from ABC.com? DirecTV?
Is there a good place to get info on HDTV service providers and locations?
Thanks!

Direct tv does not carry the ABC HD feeds..
Right now you can only get them through your local ABC affiliates if it is broadcasting digital yet..
You can go to www.titantv.com , put in your address and it will give you the status of the local affiliates in your area who are broadcasting digital or when they will be..

What a wonderful day for HD viewers. I'm watching the Tennis US Open Semis in HD today. Then I log on to read this mind blowing news! I guess it's time to get a HiPix for the HTPC so I don't miss my favorite shows in HD.
One last time...WOOOOOHOOOOO!

If there are no sports or Monday Night Football in HD then I have no interest in ABC's programming whatsoever.

This is great news! Add this to the sports available on Direct TV's HD Net (NHL and MLB) and things are getting very interesting in the HDTV world! My Wife actually wants me to purchase a STB now!
