Times are quite different now.
Watching films in the '50s and '60s, one really didn't have to spend a great deal of time looking into where an actor came from, where they began.
Early on, it was via studio contracts. Placed in bit roles, trained in the art of acting by the studio. Later it was the acting schools in larger cities, with training in legit theater, and finally making one's way to film.
Fans of Gary Oldman, one of the great chameleon-like talents in the business -- probably best known in recent years for his role as Commissioner Gordon in the Batman series -- can be seen doing a quite extraordinary turn as Sid Vicious in Alex Cox's 1986 Sid & Nancy.
The film made its way to Blu-ray recently via MGM and Fox, and it's a very good looking, and in DTS-HD MA, sounding release.
