There are two important things that one need know about Twilight Time's new Blu-ray of Paul Schrader's Hardcore.

The mastering was performed by Columbia, which means that the resultant product will be glorious.

Director Schrader was at the top of his game.

George C. Scott, Peter Boyle and Season Hubley (who I wish had done more films) are all superb.

The disc is perfect in every way.

Unfamiliar with this one?

While it can be rough at times, for those who don't mind the darkness, it's absolutely worth your time.

This movie somehow passed me by in early 1979, or probably more truthfully, I somehow passed it by -- so what an incredible find. Looking forward to my second viewing of this TT, and I totally agree about Season Hubley.

I've always liked this film, with a powerful and typically intense performance by George C. Scott. Agree with RAH: absolutely beautiful and almost flawless transfer.

Scott is good in this, but I feel the script and film held back, as though to assure an R-rating and not offend a large portion of its potential audience. If done right, this film needed to withhold nothing -- at the risk of offending people, no holds should have been barred. After all, it appears to me that Schrader was trying to present a cautionary film. To produce the maximum impact, a "cautionary" story needs to deliver a knock-out, otherwise it is soft-peddling its message and making it seem less urgent than it should be. The subject of runaway teens being sucked into prostitution and pornography is a very real problem, and needs to be dealt with honestly (i.e. without self- or studio censorship).

A movie made for t.v. called THE DAY AFTER was pretty damned uncompromising in its depiction of the after effects of nuclear war. Yes, that was t.v. Theatrical films ought to be able to deal with a subject like that in HARDCORE and not pull so many punches. As it stands, the film is wishy-washy, in my opinion.

That's because sex/nudity is held to a much different standard than films with violence, war, destruction etc.

Agreed. We so often get things backwards. And, as with most corporations, the hypocrisy surrounding policies is pathetic.
