I know Disney is generally done with 4K disc releases, but I was under the impression from the Bits that certain perennial bestsellers (like Heat) and titles by a select few filmmakers like Spielberg and Cameron will still be considered for disc releases.
Considering Cameron is tied to Disney via Fox, I hope he'll be able to force the issue. Bill Hunt (via space.com) posted some comments from Cameron saying that he finally finished the HD transfer of "The Abyss." Fingers crossed that it's the 3-hour version (or both versions) and that it will see a 4K disc release.

The lack of the Amadeus theatrical cut on anything other than an old flipper DVD still blows my mind. You can't even buy or stream it digitally.

Same goes for Velvet Goldmine, although it at least got a BD release that appears to have gone OOP fairly quickly, and the DVD is reasonably priced on the secondary market.

Great list. No love for Ben-Hur 1959? My number one want.

I heard that when Coppola was doing part 3 restoration at paramount they went ahead and restored the other 2 pictures and are simply waiting to release around the anniversary for 4k.

It boggles my mind how many times Coppola and Paramount have led us (in)to the well of GODFATHER re-issues. I would have a full week's paycheck if all the money I've spend and am likely to spend on this trilogy were to be refunded to me.

There are certainly films from the above lists that I concur with, although I am not sure 4K would necessarily be a big visual boost on my 65" OLED. I'll go by reviews here and elsewhere. I will not wish to "upgrade" any of my 3D Blu-ray's, however. I would not want to view them in any flat format, whether it be 4K, 8K or 100K. That could change, of course, if my 3D, 4K display craps out on me (it's 5 years old and gets a lot of use).

Just as I was debating another overpriced ten-year-old disc on eBay, along comes a new restoration of Velvet Goldmine, and it even has its very own Criterion Collection rumor!
