I wouldn't rush to lionize him. There was quite a bit of revisionism in the new DI for O Brother. Deakins completely changed the look of the color grading, and basically undid the (in his own words from the original production, as you can hear about 45 seconds into the video Oliver posted) "very dry and dusty" look that was the whole rationale for using digital color grading in the first place. By the time the Blu-ray was released, he decided he was over that, and gave all the colors a boost.
