For many years now MLB has had an opening couple of games layed by two teams in a different country as a showcase, I guess. I know previously a couple places they played was in Mexico and Australia. This year the San Diego Padres and the Los ANgeles Dodgers are playing two games in Seoul, South Korea. I just discovered yesterday that if I want to watch the first game, live anyway, it will be starting at 3am!

MLB Opening Day!

Dodgers win 5-2! With this help: A routine grounder went through the webbing of Padres first baseman Jake Cronenworth. (It's ruled an error if your glove webbing malfunctions? It's not the player who actually made the error so that seems a bit unfair.)

Police: No bomb found after threat before Dodgers-Padres in Seoul

SEOUL, South Korea -- South Korean police said they've found no explosives at Seoul's Gocheok Sky Dome after searching the site Wednesday following a reported bomb threat against Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani.

___

The Dodgers Betts, Ohtani and Freeman became the first MVPs to hit 1-2-3 in a batting order since Philadelphia's Joe Morgan, Pete Rose and Mike Schmidt during 10 games in 1993. The only other instances were by Cincinnati's Big Red Machine, with Rose, Morgan and George Foster on May 13, 1978, and Rose, Morgan and Johnny Bench on May 5, 1976.

After reading about Ohtani’s gambling scandal, I have some major concerns regarding sports and gambling.
I read a headline at another site about an interpreter of a star player being accused of scamming money. Does this involve Ohtani?

The way the proliferation of sports betting is increasingly advertised, allowed and condoned side by side with professional sports is it any wonder things like this won't happen and keep happening? And with so many players salaries all out of proportion to reality now, is it any wonder they and those around them won't be involved? Way to start the new MLB season.

I can't even imagine what it's like (the advertising I mean) in other states. In California the voters rejected two separate propositions in 2022 that would have legalized sports gambling in the state. The first, Proposition 26, would have legalized sports betting at tribal casinos, while Proposition 27 would have legalized online and mobile sports betting. Both were handily voted down. Thank you California voters! With the amount of money involved I'm sure it'll be back on the ballot again and again and again and....

I don't understand why voters rejected legalized sports gambling in California. Why are people against it?

In 2000 when California had a surplus of money there was a proposition to legalize gambling run by native Americans (tribal casinos on tribal lands). The proposition also had a provision that none of the profits from these casinos would be taxed by the state. I didn't vote for it because of that. A little responsibility with your profits is a good thing. It passed, however. All of the ads were basically about fairness to the indigenous tribes, not really about the gambling.

These two gambling initiatives a couple years ago, actually pitted the tribal casinos against other Native American groups in the state who said they weren't getting anything out of those enormous profits. So the gambling interests said they would support those other tribes with part of their profits from the online and mobile sports betting if it passed. The tribal casino interests didn't want the competition from the other gambling and ran around the clock ads for months denouncing the other proposition, which also legalized betting at licensed race tracks, while the out of state gambling interests ran counter ads with the other CA tribes playing on the fairness factor and how these rich Indian tribes were being greedy and not sharing with poor Indian tribes. Meanwhile, anti-gambling interests had their own ads denouncing both of these propositions.

For me, personally, I don't like all this gambling mentality and I didn't want to see advertisements for it all of the time as people in other states who have it told me about. Personally, CA is near Vegas and Reno and if people really feel they want to gamble I say go there. Now there's also all the gambling resorts. There's enough advertising in the state for the tribal casinos as is. I'm lucky if a day goes by that I don't see multiple ads for the Pechanga Resort & Casino. Emphasis on Casino.

It was two ballot propositions mostly funded by out of state gambling interests (and constantly advertised that way by the opposition) and the seeming war between Indian tribal interests (the haves and have-nots) that sank these propositions, fortunately. If one or the other had been on the ballot by itself it might have won.

Prop. 26: Yes: 33% No: 67%
Prop. 27: Yes: 18%. No: 82%

MLB has officially announced an investigation into the Ohtani situation. They had no choice in doing so.

The question is how thorough will the investigation be? You know baseball will not want to suspend/ban Ohtani, no matter what is uncovered.

True but that doesn’t mean they’re going to be the only one investigating this situation. They better do it right or the coverup could be worse than one player possibly having a gambling problem.

I'm stil fuzzy on a lot of the details.
Am I correct that there is no suggestion, information, or insinuation that Ohtani was actually making any bets?

All the actual gambling was done specifically by the Interpreter and Ohtani's money was being used to pay off the Interpreters Debts.

The only thing linking Ohtani was whether he knowingly (or not) paid off those debts and there are conflicting accts of that situation.

There are money transfers involved that came from Ohtani's bank accounts. Anybody that knows anything about money transfers from banks is that they checked a few times with that person before sending any money. At 500K a pop, there had to be some follow up from the bank to Ohtani himself. So, call me skeptical about Ohtani being ignorant about the money used to pay off those gambling debts due to the fraud protections, financial institutions use today.
