Who’s watching the April 8, 2024 Eclipse?

I’m traveling to Indy, to stay with family, and experience totality. I enjoyed the 2017 partial eclipse with friends. But I’ve never seen a total eclipse. This year’s is both easy to get to, two locations where I have family and friends, and is possibly the last one in my life I could get to. So I’m taking a long weekend vacation, and going for it.

I didn’t think it was going to be a total eclipse in Indianapolis. I have already posted this in another thread, but since I drive for a living, all I want to do is get through Monday (I am driving right through the prime area, through Cincinnati, Dayton on up north on I-75, pretty close to the time it’s supposed to be happening), and if traffic stops on the interstate during the event, which I anticipate happening, then I will take that opportunity to give it a glance. I expect a nightmare on Monday.

We’re supposed to get about 90% coverage from where I am, and the kids are very excited to see it. We have the special glasses ready to go!

Same here. The local weather station predicts a nice, sunny day on Monday.

I saw one when I was a kid in the 60s. We weren't in the path of totality, but it was impressive anyway. Near as I can tell, it must've been this one.

Heading up to the Adirondacks tomorrow to experience totality. Had a bitch of a time finding a motel room. Going to have to pay close attention to the cloud map Monday morning to figure out the best chance of a clear view.

We are going to Dallas area to visit sister-in-law plus see eclipse. 50/50 chance for cloud coverage, so we are crossing our fingers. This will be my third full eclipse after Oregon in 2017 and Europe in the late 90’s.

The only thing close to a total eclipse I have a vague memory of was in Aston PA, Delaware County, a southwest suburb of Philly. I was a kid, maybe 7 years old, around 1970. I remember I wasn’t allowed outside- I assume my parents were worried that my sister and I would look straight at it. I do remember the sky being dark.

I had traveled to Hawaii in 1991 to see the total solar eclipse then. It was great! I would liked to have traveled to the path of totality this time, but not to be.

Rochester was my other easy option for seeing this eclipse. Weather wise, it’s looking like a toss up between Indy and Rochester. Partly cloudy in both locations.

Hoping friends and family in ROC have good viewing. And hoping here in Indy it’s clear during the afternoon.

Can't wait until it's over. Just don't understand all the hullabaloo.
The 2017 eclipse was partial in Virginia, but it was a perfect summer day, and had a great afternoon patio party with friends, taking the afternoon off from work. I could only wish for more days like that.

But, everything I’ve read over the years, is that a total eclipse is unlike anything else. I’m hoping for clear skies for the chance to look at the sun directly with no eye protection (at totality, not before or after). For the chance to see solar flares around the sun’s corona. Maybe to get a sense of the nighttime world waking up in the middle of the afternoon, fooled by the blotting out of the sun momentarily.

Or not. An astronomical event easily obscured by cloudy spring weather. We’ll see.

But an eclipse is like a perfect sunset or being outside in a magically quiet and beautiful snowfall or any other natural phenomenon that are both common-ish but uncommon for most of us to experience.

So here’s hoping It’s everything it can be for me and my wife.

And if this is not an experience you care at all about, it’s only one day every 10 or 20 years, so our enthusiasm is only fleeting upset to your life. :)

Dave, Adam, I wish you clear sky’s and the best experience during the eclipse! And I hope you take some pictures.

Your post about what happens during totality reminded me of my experience. I thought I’d share my experience, in 1991 I flew to Oahu Hawaii to visit some family and also to see the eclipse. On the morning of July 11, I got on a plane and flew from Oahu to the Big Island and I was just making it up as I went. The airport was small and right near the beach, IIRC. So I just walked out to an open area and waited for totality at 8:28am or so. there was some clouds overhead, but I got lucky as it clear enough to see the sun. Though it wasn’t perfect, I was able to see the eclipse. I remember it did get darker and it was very quiet. The air temperature did get a bit cooler. But it wasn’t dark like night. I don’t recall how long I stayed to watch afterwards, but I went back to the airport and flew back to Oahu. :).

I did bring a Canon AE-1 fillum camera with a 35 to 70mm zoom. I managed to capture a decent shot of the eclipse. The only filter on the lens was likely a UV filter, but it’s likely I had no filters. And I did it handheld! A few years ago, I scanned the negatives at high resolution and did some minor photoshop work to clean up the image as there was some motion blur.

I am going to get to a truck stop I frequent today, just north of Lima OH, to see if there’s any parking, as the eclipse is starting (at about 1:54PM). The plan is to stay parked, until 3:30PM, as the moon is leaving the path of the sun.

I got to see the partial in 2017. Everyone at work went outside for about 15 minutes to watch. Even though it was only partial, it was still really cool.

My plan is to work from home today doing annual online training classes. Hopefully, the clouds will cooperate since I’m in the path of totality.

I was traveling with a co-driver during the 2017 eclipse- we weren’t that close to the totality region, but traffic was still jammed.
If there is no parking at that truck stop, I’ll just likely head to my customer, and wait to deliver the load.

Weather service says "Sunny" at your location. We're forecast to have "Mostly sunny" skies so I'm assuming the best. We're being sent home at noon in anticipation of and to avoid traffic issues later today so I'll be watching from the comfort of my front or back yard. Both have a good view of the sun that time of the day. My 20yo grandson, 16yo granddaughter, and 13yo granddaughter are supposed to join me.

It's only supposed to be 70% here in South Carolina, so it's nothing for me to get excited about. If we were back in Michigan, it is supposed to be 98% at our house, and 100% within about a 30-45 minute drive.

My wife and I rented a lovely house in Ketchum, Idaho, directly in the path of totality, for the 8/21/2017 total eclipse. We observed the event (which was absolutely SPECTACULAR!), then got married that afternoon!! I had my telescopes set up and my wife had two fully automated full-frame cameras going, and she got some amazing images. See below.

I'm stuck in Phoenix for this eclipse, babysitting our ailing 15-year-old Cattle Dog, and will only see the partial with about 64% coverage. My wife drove to Marion, Illinois near the centerline, and is all set up again for this one. The weather is looking fairly good there this morning, and she's ready!

If you're in the path and the weather cooperates, you're in for a treat. A total solar eclipse is a stunning, sublime event.

Remember, these images are of the 2017 total eclipse, not the eclipse happening today...
