A huge take for Creed 3. I think it was forecasted to come in at the $30 million range.

Edit: projections were for $38 - $40 million. This was like 50% above those.

Then why did "Ant-Man 3" disappoint?

Ant-man 3 as a film may have disappointed, but
I wouldn’t say that its box office has - it depends on one’s expectations. Relative to the other 2 Ant-man films, it looks like this 3rd film will be in the same ballpark ($500-600m worldwide)? If one was expecting $800m-1bn then yes, that would be disappointing.

What I’m saying is that the success of Creed III may have been magnified because he had just been in Ant-Man 3. People who were amazed by his performance in that film may have been enticed to go to Creed III (especially as trailers for Creed III were likely shown in front of Ant-man 3).

I haven't seen Creed III yet (I'm still stuck at home with Covid) but I intend to see it as soon as I'm negative and can go out again without making anybody else sick.

That being said, I think this opening is a result of the goodwill the first two Creed films have generated over the years. My friends who have seen it have all been positive. It also suggests that most people weren't too bothered by Rocky's absence.

The opening for Quantumania likely got an "Avengers bump" because Scott featured so heavily in Endgame. He hadn't been in an Avengers movie before. And there was also the hype around it being the introduction of Kang as the MCU's next big villain. However, it is important to remember that the $200 million budget is higher than the two previous Ant-Man films. I do think that the large week-to-week drops and general lukewarm reception are cause for concern. If I worked for Marvel (which I don't), that isn't the kind of reception I would want to a film which is meant to tee up the next few years of storytelling.

No offense to Jonathan Majors because he's a fantastic actor but I think he's on his way up rather than helping the box office for his movies. It was just three weeks ago that he had a movie that a large number of people saw and with or without him, Creed III was a movie that people wanted to see. That being said, I think the Marvel movies and Creed (not to mention, his talent) will help Majors now become more of a box office draw.

We will see about that soon. Majors had a movie called Magazine Dreams at Sundance which Disney acquired via Searchlight and will be positioning for next awards season. So that will tell us a lot about Majors' drawing power outside of these two franchises.

Yeah, I think it's a major - ha ha! ;) - stretch to think Majors is a box office draw. I suspect he's largely unknown to the general public.

Majors is becoming this decade's Jude Law. Remember when Law was in like 8 movies in one year? (IIRC)

‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ Locks & Loads Estimated $8M On Thursday Night – Box Office

EXCLUSIVE: The most critically acclaimed John Wick of all-time, Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 4, is seeing the franchise’s best Thursday previews of all-time at around $8M per industry estimates tonight.

Previews began at 3PM today for the R-rated pic. Tracking had the Chad Stahelski-directed sequel heading for a $65M-$70M opening weekend, which would rep a franchise best stateside.

That estimated $8M preview number easily bests the $5.9M preview figure of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum which turned into a previous franchise high opening day of $22.6M and 3-day of $56.8M back in May 2019.

Anything opening next weekend that will take Wick off the big screens with Atmos? The reason why I'm asking is I want to watch the first three movies again before seeing this fourth film. This will give me a week to do so.

Yes. Dungeons And Dragons will be knocking Wick off the premium screens. At least in my neighborhood. I would check with your local theaters.

The marketplace has been very crowded right now. It seems like every week there is a new movie taking the premium screens. I saw Creed III in its second week because I was sidelined with Covid for a while and couldn't go in the first week. By the time I got there, it was already in a small auditorium because Scream VI had taken over the premium one. Then last week it was Shazam. Now, John Wick, then Dungeons and Dragons and then Mario will get the premium screen for a week each. I guess this is just what happens when the schedule is so crowded with tentpole movies. I'm sure this is great for theater owners because they have a constant flow of new stuff to show, but it does mean you've got to go early in order to see something in a premium format.
