Per deadline:
John Wick 4 gets a franchise setting 73.5 million opening weekend. That is the best R rated opening since the pandemic. Shazam has a whopping 69% drop.

‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Locks Up $38.5M Opening: Is This Enough To Start A Franchise? – Sunday Box Office

I think it depends on the final box office total. I plan to see it this week because I love movies with dragons and I'm a fan of the two lead actors.

Well, it can't spoil me more than knowing there is a big cameo in the movie.

there are very little dungeons and dragons in this film.

From my limited time playing the game in the 80s, a “dungeon” came to signify any place with a bunch of rooms or spaces that’s not out in the open air. So a castle, a temple, a cave, etc. could all be considered “dungeons”, in addition to the literal definition of a dungeon. This notion may have changed in the last 30 years or so, but that was my understanding.

Open air environments would be called “wilderness” and require different mapping guidelines. As the game evolved, there were town adventures as well. This added variety as the game was initially (back in the 70s) mostly about a team of adventurers who went into a “dungeon” with a bunch of “rooms” and encountered monsters and gathered treasure and artifacts. That was it - not much of a story. (Later on the plots became more involved, including a popular one which had a vampire named Strahd (an “adaptation” of Dracula).)

With respect to dungeons and dragons in the film… I would consider the quest to obtain the helmet (where they encounter the overweight dragon) as being in a dungeon. And the heist in Forge’s palace to also be a “dungeon”-type setting.

As for dragons, I count at least 2 (the overweight one - which I love for its comedic value and because it upends the trope that dragons tend to be sleek in these types of stories - and the stone one at the end). As an aside, while dragons are definitely a fascinating part of the game, they are very powerful creatures and tend not to be used when players are starting out. Indeed, one would have to be quite experienced or sufficiently “leveled” up before an encounter with a dragon makes sense.

So, yes, not a lot of dungeons or dragons in the film, but there is plenty enough without making it seem like DND is only dungeons and dragons.

Cheers!

‘Super Mario Bros’ Hits High Scores: Record Opening For Animated Pic At $377M+ WW, 5-Day U.S. Record $204M+; ‘Air’ Soars To $20M – Sunday Box Office Update

SUNDAY AM WRITETHRU after Saturday PM update:Refresh for more analysis At close to 10PM PST last night, we told you that Illumination/Universal’s Super Mario Bros was still raking in business and as of this morning, the feature take of the Nintendo game didn’t gross $56M, rather a near $57M for what is now a $146.36M 3-day, massive $33,1K theater average, and a record 5-day of –wow– $204.6M per Universal this AM. That kicks Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen‘s $200M Wednesday-Sunday opening to second place among 5-day U.S./Canada records. Among Easter weekend openings, Super Mario Bros ranks third behind 2016’s Batman vs. Superman ($181M) and 2015’s Furious 7‘s $161M. If overseas is still at $173M by tomorrow AM, then the new global opening record for an animated movie set by Super Mario Bros stands at $377.2M.

The huge success of Super Mario Bros. illuminates—so to speak, apologies—a shocking trend of the past year: Universal is crushing Disney at the box office when it comes to animation.

The June 17th 2022 Pixar/Disney movie Lightyear had an estimated cost of $200 million, and a worldwide box office of $226 million. Since studios get back only a bit more than half the box office, and since the cost of the Lightyear doesn't include c.$100 million in advertising and overhead for a huge movie like this, Deadline says that even after generous estimates for home video revenue the loss was over $100 million on Lightyear.

In comparison, the July 1st 2022 Illuminations/Universal release Minions: Rise of Gru had an estimated cost of $100 million, and worldwide box office of $940 million. Profit is probably well over $400 million when including home video revenues.

Disney's Strange World release in Nov. 2022 had an estimated cost of $180 million, and a shockingly low box office of $73 million. There are whole Hollywood swimming pools full of that red ink. Deadline estimates over $150 million in losses for this title.

In comparison, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which I haven't seen, seems like it might pass $1 billion, on an estimated cost again of $100 million.

Plus Universal also owns DreamWorks, where Puss in Boots: The Last Wish did a pretty solid $483 million worldwide.

Anyway, it's a shock to me that Disney and Pixar are crashing so often at the box office these days.
