Warner just released (through New Line) the extended cut of Malick's The New World and they are producing his latest, The Tree of Life (TBA 2009). Since Malick and Warner seem to be getting along so well right now, why not release his first film -- a Warner catalog title -- as a deluxe DVD and...
It's a really monumental film and it took me years to finally find it. Apparently it was a minor miracle it made it to disc in the first place... but it's now OOP and at $40+ for a used bare-bones disc, far exceeds by budget. This title is just one classy Region 1 release away from proper...
Paramount is releasing the predicted "unrated director's cut" of Beowulf on February 26th, 2008. That was quick. A separate WS theatrical version will also be available. Source: VPD, Inc.
Sony/Columbia extended cuts are so hit-and-miss that it's hard to be excited for yet another mediocre film getting this treatment. Oh, well. I'm sure there are some fans out there who will be pleased. At least it's director-approved, presumably, rather than just a completely mindless double-dip.
Hey - just came across a listing at work for a 2-disc special edition of Suspiria coming on 9/25. Suppose this is just a re-purposing of the limited-edition, 3-disc Anchor Bay set, minus the soundtrack? It might be a new edition entirely, since we're getting a new, 2-disc Stendhal Syndrome...
The newsletter has an image of flying locusts, and the words "This fall, set your clocks for magic hour", or something to that effect. If I guess correctly, they mean that none other than Terrence Malick's Days of Heaven is coming on Criterion DVD! Holy crap! Just when I thought nothing...
Those of you who have watched the Twin Peaks: Season Two DVDs have seen the Inland Empire teaser with a promise of an August 14th release date. My distributor confirms that and is pre-ordering now, and listing it as a 2-disc special edition. I didn't hesitate to order :) Sweet! EDIT: I...
Hey... I just saw my distributor is listing 2-Disc Collector's Editions of those two great David Lean classics on March 20th. Any word on whether these are just re-packagings the old two-discers? Or should I be biting at the bit to have remastered discs of these films; with the quality of the...
ThinkFilm is releasing Terry Gilliam's Tideland on DVD Febuary the 27th after a nearly non-existant theatrical campaign. I'll be glad to finally see it... the road to getting this film released has been a very long and sad one for ol' Terry. Totally off topic, but I don't feel like starting a...
All I can say is: whaaaaa....? EDIT: But hey, we also get the 2-Disc Collector's Editions of The Searchers and Stagecoach on the same day, so all is well!
Yep, and there'll be two versions, both streeting 6/13 for $24.96: The Princess Bride: Dread Pirate Roberts Edition The Princess Bride: Buttercup Edition Uhhhh... no word yet on what this is supposed to mean. I'm guessing just packaging variations? We'll see in June.
Casualties of War: Extended Cut 4/25 The Patriot: Extended Cut 4/25 (Mel Gibson version) The Replacement Killers: Extended Cut 4/25 A Midnight Clear: Deluxe Edition 4/25 EDIT: correction... Moonstruck: Deluxe Edition 4/18 and distributed by MGM, not Columbia. $19.94 All street the same...
Just watched this film, a pretty good one. The DVD presentation, tho, is outstanding. The video is very, very nice... lots of EE, but still damned good... The DTS-ES track on this disc is absolutely incredible. A solid hit in presentation, I think. As for the film... a good effort. I'm...
It's been officially announced to retailers that The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe will be released on April 4. It'll be the usual - widescreen and fullscreen versions, and then for a few extra bucks, you can get a widescreen "Collector's Edition" - that probably means a bonus disc while the...
I'm looking at buying this film sight-unseen. My questions, and I would very much appreciate answers, are: 1. Is the latest Region 1 release OAR? It is listed at one dealer as being 1.66/1 but the IMDB says that the OAR is 1.85. 2. Has there ever been a Region 1 or Region 0 release of the...
This is something that's been talked about pretty widely, recently: Soderbergh releasing low-budget films simultaneously in theaters, pay-per-view and DVD. The first in this series (I think it's something like a five-film contract) is called Bubble and it comes out on January 31st. Some...
I'm watching the current DVD right now and cringing. The video is borderline unwatchable (looks like Last Emperor and with more EE) and the audio is paper-thin. And there's a serious framing issue... I can actually see part of the audio track on the side of the screen in some shots! The first...
Release date for the 2-disc special edition is Oct. 25th. That's right: next Tuesday. Get on those pre-orders! Features and specs: *Region 0 *2-Disc Set (keep case) *Widescreen - 16.9 *Dolby Digital Surround Ex - English *Audio Commentary - Alan Jones - Journalist, Kim Newman -...
I just rewatched the DVD... much better film than I remember! As I recall, there is an international cut with a few added scenes, which hints maybe that Branagh never got final cut -- it clocks in suspiciously close to the 2-hour limit that Coppola's Dracula also adhered to. (Actually, speaking...
Ridley Scott's Kingdom Of Heaven will be made availible in seperate fullscreen and widescreen versions. Both will be two-disc sets. No cover art availble; fingers crossed for the awesome theatrical poster being used. No word about the Extended Edition much spoken-of during the film's...
Sorry if this is the wrong place - I couldn't decide which forum this belonged in. My question is: I have an opportunity to play some films at a local small-town theater. Of course I hit the roof, but maybe too soon. I have no idea what it takes to rent a print of certain movies, and what it...
Hey guys, I had a bunch of release dates, here, none of them especially huge announcements, so I thought I might just lump 'em together. Here goes: SEPTEMBER 13 House of Wax (1953) SEPTEMBER 20 The Longest Yard (2005) OCTOBER 4 The Amityville Horror (2005) The Warriors: Ultimate...
October 11th, to be exact. (That's Danny the Dog to those of you living outside of the U.S.) I don't have any specific details, but the date is confirmed. There will be seperate fullscreen and widescreen versions of the theatrical version availible, as well as a widescreen-only release of an...
They just issued a DVD for this very slick and lean (89 min) action picture and I just saw it for the first time. I picked it up very cheap ($6.99) on street date based on the reviews I read of it and wasn't disappointed. Side A has the film in pan-and-scan with a trailer. Side B has the...
I remember seeing Orson Welles's version of Othello on video when I was a kid and it's part of the reason I turned into such a Shakespeare nut as a teenager. It's a killer flick, and I had the sudden urge to buy it on DVD... but it's OOP, and although I can find it used, it doesn't look like a...
This just in from OFFICIAL sources: GLADIATOR: EXTENDED EDITION 3-DISC SET Featuring "all-new, widescreen extended version of the film including 17 minutes of additional scenes" AND the original theatrical cut on the first disc!!! No director's commentary is availible :frowning: but there...
I'm helping my ex-manager start his dream video store, and he has placed me in charge of ordering movies. It's a gigantic task, and I really don't want to mess up, since his personal financial future is on the line, here. We had a few hundred more or less random DVDs to start with from...
