I'd second the Jasper jig. They are easy to use and ready to go for just about and hole size. I also second the up cut spiral. The small straight bits tend to clog and bind, getting very hot, while the upcuts expel the dust quite nicely. Do the 1/2" straight bit for the surround then the 1/4"...
Yea, I definitely plan of stuffing it but it won't likely be enough. In general though, would a 1 dB hump that far down be a problem? My guess is that I can also tune it out in the XO, (at least I think so!).
I am building a WMTMW speaker using the CCS WR125S as the mids. The problem is that the driver requires so much volume for a flat response that it adds considerable size to the box. If I bring the volume for those drivers down to a reasonable level, it puts a .8 dB hump in the curve at...
Ok, I was just curious. The jbl model was what I was talking about. I was thinking that if I wanted to hide them behind columns it might be easier to make them that way. I might build a couple of boxes, (one of each shape), with the same drivers and do some measurements of each.
Thomas, Thanks for the info. I think I understand the science but what I don't understand is why people choose narrow over wide. I have heard that some people try to tune the baffle step to coincide with the XO so that it can be 'solved' with one speaker but I've also seen that many seem...
I am curious about something. Why are most speakers narrow and deep instead of flat and wide. It would seem that baffle step would be easier to deal with if it's farther away from the XO frequency. Just curious.
Darn! Too late, I already ordered the drivers. Once I saw the price of the JX92's I choked and ordered the CSS WR125S as the mid though, (another XBL design). This first design is a learner so I can come up to speed on Soundeasy and cabinet/XO design. As I mentioned, one of the nice things...
Thanks Parker. One of the nice things about using wide band drivers with a digital XO is that I can do a lot of experimentation with crossover designs and, (hopefully!), learn something in the process. I'm ordering the drivers and will begin having fun next month, time permitting.
I'm going to (re)attempt to do a design of a WMTMW 3 way. My first attempt was interrupted by a layoff, (company closing), and retirement, not to mention a move and new house build. (I'm just at the wiring stage but anxious to get started on this anyway!) Anyways, I was thinking of the...
Hi all, I haven't been here for a while! Anyways, does anyone have a good suggestion for the best quad op amp to use for active crossovers? I was looking at the OPA4134 but they discontinued the dip and only have SMT now. I guess I could live with that but dips are much easier to...
Dennis, I did get a hold of John and he filled me in. It sounds like a great simplification. I think it's definitely doable now, particularly with the optimization tools available these days. Thanks, Phil
Anthony, I thougt I would start with them as a simple MTM first and get that right. I'd then proceed to add the W's. I already have LAUD and Soundeasy will do a complete model of the WMTMW and optimize an XO for me. I guess what I am really asking is "are these good, compatible speakers...
Hello all,
I currently have a Snell HT setup with 5-LCR500's, 2-SUR500's, 2-SUB550's and and a dual Tempest sealed 0.7 sonosub. After reading an article on Dunlavy in Widescreen Review and his supsequent series of articles, I haven't been able to get him out of my head.
His beliefs are that...
I have to agree with Dan. I built a dual sealed tempest, (466L I think). LspCAD showed it flat to 10 Hz in my room, (with EQ).
After I built it and hooked up the EQ, I could indeed get it flat to 13-14 Hz. Why not 10? Because the Rane PE-17 has a non defeatable 10 Hz minimum high pass...
I just finished a dual sealed tempest a month ago. What I did was cut 1"x1" squares of 1/4" plywood, drill them and hammer the t-nut into them.
I then slathered them with glue and used the screw holes in the end cap to tighten them against the MDF, (using the screws as clamps, in essence)...
Do you have a USB port? I just bought a MIDIMAN 1X1 USB Midi interface, (I had trouble getting my Creative AWE64 to behave). I hooked it up and it worked fine after I installed the drivers.
I now have a pair of 25' midi cables so that I can control my FBD in the HT with my PC in my office. I...
O.K. I got home and got it to work after some figiting. One thing no one mentioned is that you need to end the midi program on the FBD before you can use it, (after it's sync'd up).
You can tell if it's sync'd because the IN/OUT led flashes twice as fast as the STORE led. That's when you can...
Dax,
Sorry 'bout that! It looks like Paul answered my question though.
Paul,
It looks from your post that you can change individual filters in real time. Is this true? I thought from the manual that you could only upload/download a whole configuration.
I hope to give this a try this...
When I built my sonosub, I found caulk in an aerosol can at Home Depot. It holds just enough to do both ends of a 24" sonotube.
It's only about 8" high and you just hold the nozzle against the corner, (where the tube meets the endcap), and press. The aerosol does the rest! It's like point...
Dax,
I downloaded that software some time ago but could never get it to work. Is there some magic incantation that you have to say over the unit to get it to upload/download data?
I've tried two different PC's with two different sound cards and two different cables to no avail.
So give it...
Keith is right. That's why they are great, the force is a sideways motion not down. If you slip, your hand goes past the sub, not through it.
I've placed the tube in the corner for now and was able to get it +/-3dB from 20-159 by knocking down the peaks with the Rane PE-17. This only took an...
High all,
I just finished my new 24" sonosub and I love it. It's a dual sealed Tempest driven by a Bryston 4B-THX, (400W/Ch into 4 ohms), and tamed by a Rane PE-17.
It's basically the low Q design in the Tempest white paper X 2, (i.e 460L, 128 oz polyfill).
I haven't had a chance to...
I am currently doing a dual Tempest low Q design sonosub, (Dans 230L X 2). I just got word that the drivers are on their way so I should be done this weekend.
I'll let you know how it sounds.
