I notice that there is DVD of The Thief starring Ray Milland and Rita Gam from Image Entertainment. Does anyone have this disc and can they offer an informed opinion about the picture quality? I'd like to have this film in my collection but I'm reluctant to blind buy anything from Image Entertainment.

Opinions please!

No subtitles, though.

(that's a joke)
Quite a good joke too! (For the enlightenment of those who know nothing about this film, there is no dialog at all)

Image has rereleased many of their older titles as burned DVD-R discs, especially ones that had previously been OOP, so if that matters to you, be forewarned that this may no longer be a pressed DVD.

Just finished watching my copy of this and it does indeed look great. Wonderful location shooting of New York City and Washington D.C.

Didn't Ray Milland do a similar experiment with no dialog in his 1955 Republic western A MAN ALONE? I seem to remember the first reel or so having no dialog and only music and sound effects.

You're right. There is only sound effects and music until he arrives in town. Then there is a small amount of dialog among the drinkers in the saloon which is followed by another sequence with no dialog where the main character, Wes Steel, tries to flee the vigilantes and takes refuge in the cellar of a house . . . . . . which turns out to belong to the sheriff . . . . . who has a beautiful and highly charged daughter.

I saw A Man Alone when it first came out and I was a small boy. I've always thought it's a good film but I seem to be the only person who does. Even normal Western enthusiasts dismiss this movie. I was very disappointed when Olive Films decided the elements they had been given were not good enough.

I watched The Thief today. As Camps and other advised, the picture quality is good. Many thanks for that recommendation. I'm glad to have this disc in my collection.

I didn't realise until today that this was the film that introduced Rita Gam. What a face! She should have become a big star. Maybe Mabel Normand in Sunset Boulevard was right when she shrieked "Fools! Don't they what a face looks like?"
