Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which I viewed at The Goldwyn earlier this year has arrived on Blu-ray...

strangely without Atmos.

Anyone seriously considering adding Dolby Atmos to their home theater environment should be advised that this film is not yet ready for prime time on Blu-ray.

Perhaps Fox's seeming exclusivity to DTS for lossless tracks has something to do with it?

I don't think I've ever seen a Fox-authored disc with anything other than 24-bit DTS-HD MA for lossless audio, even back when they were using BD-25 discs and MPEG-2 video encodes.

Maybe they await that DTS UHD codec?

Just about every Dolby Atmos film shown in theaters this year, hasn't been released with Dolby Atmos audio on their home video release. The only ones I can think off the top of my head that has been is Transformers: Age of Extinction and The Expendables 3.

Not a helpful means of moving Atmos into the home environment. Apes has a superbly crafted Atmos track. With the intent of adding the process to my system, Apes was a must own. Not a pleasant surprise upon spinning the disc.Hopefully Fox won't be coming out in six months with a special Atmos Edition.RAH

My guess is that they'll wait until the DTS version of Atmos (whatever they're going to call it) is available.

Is this due to a disc space issue with the 3D Blu-ray format? Like Gravity 3D not having Atmos but the 2D Diamond Lulz edition will?

Gravity is a 91 minute film.

I invested in the iTunes digital version. It had a great picture and supplements. The sound was acceptable.

It seems to me that this is a cautious move as well.

For better or worse, Dolby TrueHD has been largely phased out on a global scale. Beyond a few titles from Paramount and Warner, a handful of specialty labels, and Japan (where, it seems, TrueHD has a small foothold), most releases now carry DTS-HD MA, or LPCM for mono and stereo tracks.

The last innovation Dolby brought out, 96kHz upsampling, came and went, with the highest profile release being The Right Stuff, if I recall correctly. Again, Dolby has had more success with this format in Japan and also Hong Kong.

There are already a handful of announced or released Japanese BDs with Dolby Atmos tracks, most from Japanese distributor Pony Canyon. The Japanese releases of Nature (Enchanted Kingdom 3D), Transendence, and the forthcoming release of I, Frankenstein all have / will have Atmos tracks:

This release is from NBCU (Universal) Japan:

http://www.amazon.co.jp/Enchanted-Kingdom-3D-Blu-ray/dp/B00MOD2KP4/

http://www.amazon.co.jp/Enchanted-Kingdom-Blu-ray/dp/B00IHQMOYO/

These are from Pony Canyon:

http://www.amazon.co.jp/Transcendence-Blu-ray/dp/B00MXZQFPY/

http://www.amazon.co.jp/I-Frankenstein-Blu-ray/dp/B00OK6O5O2/

I think everybody else is waiting on the DTS version to go into consumer hardware before they decide which horse to back. I know the major reason I have not adopted an Atmos receiver (beyond awaiting HDCP 2.2) is that I don't want a receiver that can't support the DTS-UHD titles that come out.

Interesting. Major difference in functionality btw between the way that Dolby and DTS process 7.1My Fair Lady is Dolby TrueHD 7.1 96k -- true, not upsampled. A huge audio file.Don't believe Right Stuff ever arrived in 96k, although announced.RAH

All those channels and still no My Fair Lady five screen. The rain in Spain, mainly rains with below surround and why no below surround for mixers to get some sound effects like rain mostly in wide open shots sounding underneath my my cinema seats and very possible.

I grow tied of atmos auro and next UHD all overhead with 2 1/2 sound format cos they can't count? 3D is

Side to side
Forwards and backwards
Up and down

all this formats do is
Side to side
Forwards and backwards
and Up (but where is down)?

I'll wait a few years until they get more realistic with
15 stage channel no I'm being funny. The stage channels need to progress.

Look at lot of films and you can see it needs a
height 5 screen channel
Return the uncommon 5 screen channel in the middle
Below 5 screen channel

Below surround

The common side wall and back surrounds can stay where they are

Yes add in overhead

If I made short film it would be called "POV" so its seen from the characters (point of view) and all his footsteps would come form below surround as he is in the middle his voice would have foggy uniform all around with other discrete sounds around him and depending on his view of angle of the world, people in the distant might have footsteps in middle stage channels and other footsteps walking near to him, (get the idea)?

When it rains in the wide outside doors open down town rain will be all around on the stereo multi-surrounds and wet footstep sounds as he walks around and opens an umbrella and the moves it in-front and upwards so the sound of the rain is heard at different frequency in front on below stage channels and moves up though middle to height then vertically with rain sounding overhead on the umbrella.

Now that would be complex to mix. Then its got to be viewed by someone who knows what to look for and listen for to see if its all seamless if its flawed in some places it would need going over again.

In real life we only hear/feel it once. Unless its something mechanical man-made that can be repeated but, there are other sounds that can't be repeated.

Holophonics...
The only holographic I have seen was at Disney World, Florida, USA, February 1981, Haunted caste? There was ride went around in two seat cars on track that overlooked a ball room and ghosts dancing and ghouls head appear in the corner of right and left eye of me and my cousin and was fascinated by it look all around inside the car to figure out where the projection was coming from?

IMHO a waste of space. 96KHz versus 48KHz for sound originals from the 60s should sound identical when properly mastered. Even for today's digital originals I would be surprised if more than a tiny fraction of people could reliably tell 96 KHz apart from 48 KHz on transparent equipment.

Try telling that to Forum members who have extensive blu-ray 192/96KHz audio disc libraries of their favorite albums...like myself!!! :P

Just curious Steve. Why not just wait the two weeks or so and pick up the Bluray which includes the itunes version for free? Bluray3D/2D Bluray and digital copy for $19.99. Isn't that a better bargain?

It was on Amazon for $19.99 prior to Black Friday which I jumped all over. It will probably be that price again in the near future.

I thought my Oppo reported The Right Stuff as being 96k.

(I hope I'm not confusing this with something. I should check before posting.)
