Hello guys

I'm very much a noob when it comes to home theatre systems. I've narrowed my 5.1 speaker system search to the above 2. Considering that the Bose Acoustimass 6 III would cost about 2 times the price of Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS 5.1 SE MKII, I like to hear what you guys think when these 2 are put head to head.

Thank you in advance!

Based on those two options, I would guess that:

1) Your budget is about $700
2) You are looking for a 5.1 speaker system
3) Small size/appearance is a high priority for you

Keep in mind, that smaller speakers tend to be less efficient than larger speakers (so all things being equal, they won't be as "loud") and small speakers don't go as low as larger speakers, so your subwoofer has to compensate, which results in significantly less "bass".

These are generally the tradeoffs one is faced with when opting for satellite-sized speakers.

All of that being said, I would not go with either one. I cannot bring myself to recommend any Bose product - they are overpriced for what you get - and the BA system is simply too compromised in performance to likely be worthwhile.

Can you tell us:
1) What A/V receiver you currently have?
2) How large is the room these speakers will go in?

If you are open to bookshelf-sized speakers, there are a LOT more options that will dramatically outperform the Bose and BA systems. If you earmark about $130 for a 12" Dayton subwoofer, that leaves $570 for the other 5 speakers.

Or, you can start with some Dayton bookshelves for about $60 each, and upgrade your subwoofer to the Bic F-12 for about $200.

If you're dead set on tiny, satellite speakers some other members here may be able to offer better options to both the Bose and BA systems.

Thanks for your reply, Jason.

I'll most likely get the Pioneer VSX-528. Second choice would be Yamaha HTR-3066.

The room is about 4x4m (12x12ft).

Unfortunately, the way the room is laid out only allows placement of satellite speakers. That is why I've narrowed it down to these two.

I know that there're many naysayers for Bose. A big reason would be, like you so rightly said, it's price.

But this time, between the Bose and the BA, I'm able to get the Bose at quite a reasonable price. Just about 2x more than the BA.

Bottom line: If the Bose can perform better than the BA, need not be as much as twice as well, I'd get the Bose.

Bose doesn't perform better. They use 50 year old tech paper drivers. What about the KEF E 305*?(there is a review here for them)*305, 301...whatever it is

Around here - Bose is just a lot of marketing and way overpriced plastic speakers - that have a rather large hole in the sound that they produce - "no highs, no lows - must be Bose"

For the same amount of money you can do so much better.

It is your money, but we are trying to help you from making the mistake of falling for the Bose marketing machine....

If you just have to have the tiny satellite speakers for your room - there are much better options for the money - the KEF system mentioned above is a better choice - you can also check out this review of Orb audio.

http://www.hometheaterforum.com/topic/325773-orb-audio-peoples-choice-speaker-system-review/

A guy at work who was just married was looking for a new system - so I put together 2 recommendations with his budget - 1 that would sound better, and 1 that would look better for the wife...the wife didn't want to see any "ugly boxes" so then ended up with the orbs.

- now they are both happy - she with the look and both with the performance.

I would get the BA set and not look back. I would have a hard time spending twice as much as half as much system. You can even get that BA set in a Denon prepack with a E200 AVR for $400. You can't really beat that for the money.
